i plan to take a ride to this as well. does anyone know how long it takes to drive to montreal from long island? i heard it takes 8 but i am not so sure as it took me 9 hours to drive to buffalo and montreal looks further than buffalo on the map.

i am staying for 2 nites in montreal so does anyone have some good cheap clean hotels in the downtown area because i want to take the metro, no driving for me!
the best rate i found for 3 people so far is $100USD.

and last time i was in canada, which was 7 years ago i had no problems crossing the border- they just asked us where we were from and let us thru.

but i hear it is a little tougher since 9/11 to cross. so my question is this- i will bring my passport just in case, but i am going with some friends who do not have passports. do they have to bring a birth certificate as i have a friend who had to show this recently? or will a drivers license and a couple of other ID's be sufficent??

thanks.

ok, I wont answer all your questions because frankly there are too many of them and I'm lazy.

On the border question, all you need for Canada/Mexico is a drivers license. I went to Canada 2 months after 9/11 and I showed a drivers license and went right thru. As far as Driving times, I would say give yourself an extra hour or so for border/gas/stops/traffic/getting lost.

Yeah, basically they will ask you where you are from, if they are dicks they will make you pull over and empty your car, but usually they ont care when you are coming into canada. they are sometimes a bit stricter when you are coming back to the US

And to Caryn:

Yes, I will be @ PVD,Viva. Already working on my suite @ The Grand again gotta love the exchange rate hehe

border answer: YES bring either your passport or your birth certificates (a copy will do) and photo id if you do not have a passport. sometimes you get a nice officer who doesn't even look at your driver's license, sometimes you get a dick that wants to see everything. it's better to be safe than sorry. last weekend i pulled out my birth certificate and asked if he wanted to see it, and he said "only if i don't believe you". if they ask and you don't have proof of us citizenship, they'll retain you at the border (stuck in canada) until someone can bring/fax a copy of your birth certificate. and a social security card will not work.

they prob won't search your car as long you don't look like trouble...tell them you are meeting friends for easter weekend in montreal, NOT going to aria...

they are a little stricter now, but have relaxed a little again.

also, stop at an ATM in canada rather than getting money b4. better exchange rates.

thanks, i do not want to get stuck in canada!!

now i have another question what about customs- i know it is a crazy question but i love molson triple xxx and will i have trouble bring it back with me because the alcohol content is higher than the US allows in a beer?

whenever i go away to another country i bring back so much cigarettes and alcohol that it is a wonder i have not gotten caught and pay taxes.

is there a customs limit within north america?
