Well then my friend, your wish will soon come true. As of June 2004, all bars and clubs in Toronto will be smoke-free. This is the last "phase" of the city's smoke bylaw. Awesome!!

As for overcrowding, I absolutely hate that about the Guv. I go to see the big DJs so I can dance to their magic, as well as share the experience with friends. If I can't dance to it (I like LKD need a LOT of room), it already takes away over 50% of the pleasure away from me.

Hhhhhmmm, I wonder how this will affect cigarette company sponsorship of club events??

Maybe they will make a Gold Club tent at Guv instead?

isn't the no smoking inside club bylaw already commonplace in most Canadian cities .. ? atleast that's from what i've heard..

i think Montreal will be the last place to ever impose something like that ..

Itikia, I actually wondered about that. I suppose smokers will still go, just can't smoke inside. Don't know if it'll affect the gold club series.

LKD, you're wrong, the north american policy has led to much fewer smokers, check your statistics.

Fantom, patience my boy.

Desidel, is that true? Didn't know other cities had already done this. Frankly, I think it should be national or at least provincial. Like any other legislation aimed at protecting people's health.

OMG..dunno how u can say that....

first off..i dunno what u understood by my post

second of all,i moved to canada 2 years ago and the percentage of smokers is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY more than back in the middle east where u can smoke anywhere, anytime and no one can do anything to u. There were only 5 smokers including me among all the people i knew my age. while over here, there may be only 5 people my age who dont smoke...and i know ALOT of people..its a psychological factor that makes people smoke here..in order to rebel against the law at an age before being legal while we dont have such restrictions elsewhere

yea .. it's true, when i was in Ottawa last winter there was no smoking allowed in any clubs. It felt kinda weird being inside of a club and not having the (usual) smells there..

atleast it was a lot easier to breathe and ur clothes only end up smelling like sweat at the end of the night

I live in Waterloo and smoking is prohibited in clubs here. They do have a special smoking area though.

As far as the nubmer of smokers, I've been to europe this summer and EVERYBODY fuckin' smokes there ! it's insane !
Back in Russia even more people smoke. yet it seems that fewer die of cancer.

From what I have been told, in order for Benson to sponsor events for any nightclub they must have installed some of those cigarette machines in the club or they must sell Benson cigarettes exclusively. Either way, they make sure they sell their product inside the nightclub, but with the imposition of this new by-law Benson will definitely have to re-think their Nightclub marketing strategy as not many people will be buying inside the nightclub if they cannot smoke. The question that tobacco companies will need to ask themselves is, will they really get back 2-4 times of the sponsorship dollars they put into a club after the new by-law takes effect? I think not.

If you take a look at the UK club scene, tobacco sponsorship of club events quickly went extinct. Maybe this will happen here also, but only time will tell.
