I think you have a valid point Anscoop, but like a few other people here you are generalizing the genre of rap and its fans. The prevelence of mainstream 'gangsta' rap and the increase in the proporton of white fans is more a result of its move into the realm of popular music than it is a fault of the genre itself.

There are at least a few really talented musicians hidden behind the wall of trash spawned by the money grubbing popular music industry. Subclasses of rap that are more intelligent and evolved than the average pop rap are also likely to exist.

My view is more or less that pop music sucks. And that the pop music recording industry is a force supressing creativity in modern music, and perhaps it could happen to any genre. But that is a different story altogeather...

wow.. well everyone has their own opinions. I really dig trip hop like Portishead. She has an awesome voice, just something different. As for rap, well its ok once in awhile but it all seems way too repetitive.

Everyone got the right to listen whatever they want

and personally, i dont like to hear only a bass-loop with people talking about how hard life is, and how u should kill everyone who opposes you (at least thats what most raps song i have heard talk about, and yes they are comercial most of them)

also i never hear the lyrics of a song, i hear it as one more sound, not really to what is saying. And in rap, what they are saying is everything, so thats why i dont like it (its like just two sounds, and in trance, there are many more :] ).

If you don't generalize than you can't talk about anything, because you would have to take each case into account, you yourself were generalizing
I appreciate your at least thought out argument however though, that's more than most can say here.

Although proportion is technically accurate, the demographic I was talking about is more like totally what fuels the genre, let's face it without the wannabes, Rap would still be heavily underground, and you are correct, that's not the fault of the artists at least from my persective, since I am not involved in the genre, it lies squarely with the audience.

I think where some people have a valid point but failt to express it properly, is that RAP for the person that hasn't lived the life they 'preach' about is morally degrading, there is nothing to be gained from listening to it and I think that's an important piece of art. One could definitely argue that Trance entices an emotional response, which is unmatched and generally an aura of happiness, while one can argue that rap is depressing, morally lacking, etc.

quote:
Subclasses of rap that are more intelligent and evolved than the average pop rap are also likely to exist.

It all comes from a basic negativity though, I think that's the biggest problem, I've personally never heard a rap song, and I hope to be proven wrong that elicits morality.

interesting point you guys have

i've been listening to rap longer than i've listened to trance. personally, i like both. rap isn't bad, and i don't know why all of you are ragging on it so badly. your argument about how it sounds all the same is the exact same thing that my friends tell me about trance. they are being very narrow minded, as a lot of you it seems. but everybody likes different types of music, and if you don't particularly like a genre, then don't listen to it. you can hate it and think watever u want about it, but keep in mind there are people who do like it. how would you feel about someone who would come on here and say how much electronic music sucks? i'm sure you wouldn't be too happy, and you are basically doing and acting the same way.

agreed with mike above

whoever said 90% of rap sales are to white urban kids?

lmao id say its a very wide percentage of america

most people 10-30s listen to rap white, black, women, man whatever

too many of u make uninformed coments about something u dont know about

and rap is different then electronic music

how many dif forms of electronic music are there? dnb, house, trance .... blah blah then how many different forms of trance *hard trance, uplifiting,*

i will not listen to barely any tupac, biggy, dmx, pop music

but i will listen to alot of other stuff

i doubt many of u have heard enough rap music to know what its all about .. ive could name u 100s of artists who dont talk about drugs, violence, abusing women,(in a negative way)

not all of them are thugged out gang bangers .. in fact most artist now are totally opposite

some rap artists are brillant businessmen (masterp,JD,dr.dre)
these guys didnt make thier money from records, they made it from using skills they learned on the streets and thier smarts to make it

btw canadians dont have enough soul in them to listen to rap .. besides that its too damn cold there

I kind of agree with most of u guys, heh and that not easy.
anyway all rap isn't bad (drugs, violence.....)
But what's sad is that the more popular rap is exactly that.
take dmx or nelly and so on. Have u seen any of they'rs music vids>????? Well they are exactly what somebody mentioned above, shoving off women cars and most of all themselfs. There was one where a big black guy was robbing a bank and all the time he was waving a gun into the camera, and the security guard was big breasted women with tight shirt and very short skirt. And at the end the guy was "bathing" in the money he stole in a jacuzzy with more half naked women. Sometimes I want to shoot minesotan MTV.
well there is my coment to u.
never wrote anything this long before.

rap is a part of hip hop...its a way of life...cars,platinum jewelry and women is just a way to show the people how rich the guy really is...where he came form and where he is now...eminem is just funny, people take him soo fucking seriously when he is making fun of his dad, mom, gays and all the pop boy bands and britney....if you really want to listen to some rap music listen to Black Star (Mos Def and Talib Kweli) and common...they have music with meanings and they dont spit very fast either....how many people liked the fugges? they were hip hop and they were good, its not like every rap artist sucks, people from the inner city could relate to these hardcore artists....it aint easy for a black man to live in the US..where the whites are the majority....if you really want some rap that you could understand go dl some Dr. Dre or if you cant understand that i suggest Bow wow or litte Romeo.....You people got too much hate, let a guy make some money

so how many of you like country music??

if you don't like it, don't listen to it

very true, i like tupac and a lot of his songs. it's true a lot the rap today is all about money and hoes, but then again, they are selling millions of records and people are still buying them. if u don't like that music, don't listen to it then. people who like rap and don't listen to electronica do the same thing. rap is an entirely different genre, and you really have to learn how to appreciate a type of music before you can really say anything about it. this is true about any type of music.

Ok, you need to learn the difference between an opinion and FACTS! It is a FACT that the majority of RAP sales are made to white suburbian teens, it doesn't matter what "id" say or "youd"(in hopes that you would understand) say, that's simply a FACT.

quote:
too many of u make uninformed coments about something u dont know about

Uhh, your doing exactly what you're accusing others of doing...

quote:
ive could name u 100s of artists

Please do, I'd like to see you name more than a handful.

quote:
these guys didnt make thier money from records, they made it from using skills they learned on the streets

Hmm, and just exactly what "skills" can one learn from the streets? Pimping, stealing cars, dealing drugs, beating up people....?

quote:
people take him soo fucking seriously when he is making fun of his dad, mom, gays and all the pop boy bands and britney

Okay, so let's say we buy that as a theory, then logically Eminem should have rejected the Grammy on the grounds that he is simply a joker and does not make anything worthwhile as he admits; on the other hand he accepted it, and therefore insinuates that what he creates is a serious work of art, which leads one to believe that he is serious and he simply saying he is not for the purpose of getting out of hot water.

quote:
if you really want to listen to some rap music listen to Black Star (Mos Def and Talib Kweli) and common...they have music with meanings and they dont spit very fast either

Please, list some songs, I would like to see what you call rap with meaning.

quote:
how many people liked the fugges

Yeh, and Lauren Hill is also racist(I remember a certain inteview ), that didn't stop any white kids from buying it.... guess racism only works one way.

quote:
they are selling millions of records and people are still buying them

Sales don't justify anything, it simply shows popularity, lots of things are popular but are still worthless.

quote:
and you really have to learn how to appreciate a type of music before you can really say anything about it

An interesting and valid point.
