deadmau5 doesn't deejay. he performs his material live. that's his show. when pete tong asks him to do an essential mix, this is what deadmau5 does.
The problem I have is that the amount of effort and originality seems to be lacking a lot. He had a platform to show the world all his possibilities, but opted for a very conservative crowdpleasing mix. He could have written new material, crafted a very special mix from beginning to end. And guess what? He won essential mix of the year, and made a mix that people still listen to zealously. Everyone voted for this mix, because it was just simply good.
A better comparison would be Trentemoller and his EM. Obviously Trentemoller does a live show, even though he does DJ a bit. Yet when asked to do the essential mix, Trentemoller put together a very special eclectic mix of music in the manner of a DJ. He played plenty of his own material, yet adapted to the format. He played his music in context, thus giving it more meaning.
I don't like deadmau5's music, but my opinion on that is negligable. What bothers me more is the attitude he projects in everything he does, that is, he seems to take everything as a joke, or at least uses that as a convenient way to get out of criticism. His performance is absolutely filled with gimmicks, just like Girl Talk.
At the same time I can't really say he's doing anything terrible. I mean simple people will be attracted to his music, and more sophisticated listeners won't be. He's not ruining anything for me lol. I don't see him playing at the undergrounds or weeklies I frequent. He's making a lot of people really happy, helping them to get laid and take their first pill. And he seems like he's having a great time doing it, and taking home a big paycheck. He must be a happy dude.
Again the issue I have is, the EM is not the same venue. It's not the same simple crowd of people that follow his oversized, bobbing mouse head. The EM is (was) a venerable institution - some of the work people have done is incredible. I think deadmau5 had the opportunity to make something that would last for a long time, but instead took his typical approach of making something forgettable just to get/give instant gratification. |
good post
as far as i know hes still a young guy, maybe in years to come if hes asked to do an EM again he might take a different approach
