Or it was just people who had lived through a nightmare feeling a huge wave of relief and happiness, and wanting to express their pride that the suspect was caught by the police and that no one else was hurt.

Why not Go Boston Police! why all of a sudden a feeling of national pride???

ps i was wrong about generalizing a whole country just because of a small group of people but Im tired of listening to people pick apart the country the suspects were born in even though they are full US citizens. Nobody knows the motive yet but people and the media are already generalizing and its fuckin sad and disgusting

I totally agree. It sucks that these idiots are the face of America to some people. And again, yes, we have more than our fair share of them. But they are still the minority. There is legitimate coverage of them, but there is also (although I haven't seen it specifically in this case) I'm sure some coverage done intentionally to encourage this kind of idiocy. Media will portray what it wants us to see.

And you're right, there is no reason at all to focus on where they were born or their ethnicity. They are Americans, end of story. Some people just can't accept that and look for a way to distance themselves from it.

Because people are proud to be American? And they saw this as an attack not just on Boston, but on all of America? And because 'USA' is much easier to chant that 'Go Boston Police'? There are many reasons why they would chant 'USA'; reasons not involving hating Chechnya.

I agree that it's disgusting when people generalize, but that's what people do (as you just did). People are confused and curious and want to know what happened, so they're speculating. Unfortunately, often their speculations are not very well thought out.

The whole situation is sad.

We should focus on where they were born insofar as it leads us to figure out what happened here.

No matter how simple and harmless the headline was, some people already had all the answers before they read anything - even if everything they sad ran counter to what was being depicted.

My favourite example was a story about a 18-year-old who wiped out his car after a tyre blew up, he left the scene unscathed, and the police was investigating what happened. That's all the reporters wrote. Dozens of comments were submitted instantly, claiming that it's a shame youngsters drink and drive (no alcohol was mentioned), kids don't respect speed limits, atheists have no love for life, and so on. Why? Because these people NEED to tell themselves it wouldn't happen to them because they don't drink and drive, because they're not young, and the like.

I didn't know that, thanks for the heads up. I have to say, I take people chanting USA USA as the kind of who are exhibiting the kind of attitude that's the problem here. People with a healthy, reasonable dose of national pride don't do that in situations like this as I see it, because they're smart enough to know how it is perceived.
