Well, when i heard the news i felt rather sick.

Lets give him a chance and if he doesnt prove a hit within the next 12 months, get rid of him.

I doubt he is the manager newcastle need, but all we can do is wait and see now.

Souness just seems such a random appointment though, they must have been knocked back by a fair few people before they got down the list to him.

I'd rather have Strachan than Souness, but we don't seem to have made any approach for him. Watch Blackburn get him now

The only consolation is that he's not Terry Venables. And apparently Souness is going to be bringing his coaching staff with him, which means Dean Saunders will be our striking coach! Can you picture 'Deano' teaching Shearer how to be a striker?!

Freddy Shepherd is a very dodgy bloke, we all know that, but what he has done to this club lately beggars belief. I don't normally subscribe to conspiracy theories but something doesn't add up, the decisions over the past month have been inexplicable, and he is now lying to fans almost on a daily basis. Shepherd's son is a consultant for Stretford's Proactive Sports group, Stretford is a close friend of Shepherd and also an agent of Souness. Similarly, Stretford is an agent of Rooney and the bidding war started by Newcastle resulted in Stretford copping a couple of million quid, while Shepherd didn't seem very bothered as he pulled out of the bidding. Freddy will live by the sword and die by the sword. I wonder when he'll be off to Gibraltar to meet up with Hall and count the millions they've taken out of the club. Man Utd's shareholders demand transparency with deals like these, unfortunately Newcastle don't disclose their finances so we don't know where the money is going, other than the fact that Douglas Hall (who lives in Gibraltar) and Freddy Shepherd are two of the highest paid football chairmen around.

With the media desperate to ruin us this could be a very trying season, but we have to get behind the new manager, give him a chance and hopefully get ourselves back up the table. It's difficult to lift my spirits at the moment though, what a depressing thing to wake up to.

I feel really sorry for you guys up there in the north. Blackburn, in my opinion, has massive potential to be a top 6 team in the Prem, but Souness, well he somehow makes them relegation candidates. He fucked up Liverpool, and i got a really bad feeling he will do the same to Newcastle.

Still think it was wrong to sack Bobby after 4 games, feel bad for the bloke, because all whats happened now is the team know they can now win if they are pissed off for some reason, they can talk to the media about their own opinions on tactics, and get away with it. I heard Freddy and Bobby had a really good relationship and it was really hard for him to sack Bobby? Oh well he seems like a rate bell end, can see what happened to Derby (With our chairman appointing Gregory), with you maybe going further down the league. It isnt a unrealistic thought, just look at some big teams now, Sheff Weds, Leeds, both were once massive teams!

On a quick side note, Robson has been refurbishing his new home in the north east, but has decided not to move in because he is broken up so much about being sacked, and doesnt want to live near Newcastle and be around the people as he is so upset. Read that today, poor guy

Souness speaks:

"You have no idea just how excited I am about coming to Newcastle United and I cannot wait for Monday to come round. It cannot come quickly enough for me.

"I keep hearing that I wasn't first choice for the job. But I don't care if I was 10th or 25th choice for the Newcastle United job. And I think and believe I am the best man for it.

"I could not be more delighted that I have got it and I am quite naturally hoping to bring some success to Newcastle United. My thinking is that I am taking over a fantastic situation with Newcastle United Football Club.

"If ever a club was geared to success then that club is Newcastle United. In fact, there isn't a team in the Premiership like them.

"I don't think even Roy Keane could describe Newcastle fans as the prawn sandwich brigade. In fact, I would say Newcastle United fans are unique in the Premiership.

"They remind me of the Rangers fans in Glasgow. Like those fans, Newcastle United is the most important thing in their lives. Newcastle supporters have so much passion and when I've been there my recollection is that they are up and out of their seats backing their team, and I love that.

"Of course, when you have a passionate crowd like that you have to produce it on the field and I am aware of that.

"You would think I was going to come in and nail people to the wall judging by what I have heard and read. But that's not the way it's going to be. What I want to do is what is best for Newcastle United.

"Yes, I have discipline in my own life and I expect every Newcastle United player to be disciplined. I want every player to respect each other and everything connected with the football club.

"If they do that then there won't be any problems.

"In any case I am not the horrible hard man people seem to think I am. If you don't believe me, just ask my wife."

Very good playing the "I love the fans" card.

He's forgotten other massive soundbite however, where was: "I love Alan Shearer and look forward to working with him"

Sam happy to snub Magpies to see out Bolton contract

Sam Allardyce has admitted that he was sounded out by Newcastle to replace Sir Bobby Robson as manager at St James' Park.

Allardyce revealed that Newcastle made a tentative enquiry about his availability but was happy to reject their overtures and carry on at Bolton to see out the remainder of his 10-year contract.

"I don't know whether I've made the right decision," he told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph. "Only time will tell but I believe that the football club in general is moving in the right direction. It hasn't achieved all it can achieve yet and I want to drive it on."

Newcastle went on to appoint Graeme Souness as Robson's successor but Allardyce, who was never officially offered the post, admitted he was "hugely flattered" to be linked with the vacancy.

"It was talked about and I pondered it but I never really got offered it," he added. "But if I'd pushed it hard or walked out, I might have got it.

"I was hugely flattered. It's great to be associated with such a massive club but the chairman didn't want me to go and I didn't want to walk out, so I made the decision to stay.

"What has happened here over the last five years is what has kept me. Under any other circumstances, I should have gone to Newcastle, but perhaps it was the right club at the wrong time.

"There's too much here to leave. I had a look at it and made the decision."

10 year contract?

Sounds to me like we could have got him had we really wanted to.

But we would have to pay off the rest of his contract which would have cost millions.

Freddy's main target was either Bruce or Shearer, he has always said he wants another geordie to take over from Bobby. When both of them declined, he was forced to cast his net wider, which he should have done from the beginning. Terry Venables, I suspect, was only ever a backup in case time dragged on and noone came forward.

John Carver will manage the team for the Blackburn game as Souness starts his job on Monday.

I'm not sure if Butt is fit for Saturday though, he missed both England games with a hamstring injury. He's supposed to be nearly fit but whether he'll recover in time remains to be seen.

Charles N'Zogbia started his first game for the reserves in left midfield and assisted Ameobi's goal. He's been given the number 14 shirt so they obviously think he's good enough for the first team soon. I hope so because that will give some competition for Robert.
