So, another theory is that the new left is more of a counter reaction to traditional authoritarian Marxism a la the USSR in its heyday. This because women, ethnic minorities and queer people tended to still get the short end of the stick in similar ways to reactionary societies here (Marx infamously did not think especially highly of black people, for instance, and then from there you start wading into Strasserism and NazBol).
It's just too bad that the ideas emerging from that line of thinking are so easily focused inward towards the individual and then exploited by big corporations, resulting in utterly tone deaf things like this:
