Ameobi misses out

Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi is out of the Premiership clash with West Brom after damaging a hip.

The Magpies are hoping that the injury will clear up quickly, but admit it is a concern, although with Alan Shearer, Craig Bellamy and Patrick Kluivert available there is no need for undue concern.

Defender Titus Bramble is due to return to training on Friday after a troublesome groin injury, while Ronny Johnsen is still working towards match fitness, but Kieron Dyer is expected to be out for another four weeks with his hamstring injury.

United (from): Given, Harper, Carr, Bernard, Hughes, Elliott, O'Brien, Butt, Bowyer, Jenas, Robert, Milner, Ambrose, Shearer, Bellamy, Kluivert.

Re: Newcastle United Thread

Two quality sides battled to a 2-2 draw at St Andrews, as Newcastle came from behind to earn a point against Birmingham.

It was a game that always looked likely to be tight, and so it proved, with both sides holding the lead but being pegged back.

Jermaine Jenas had given The Magpies an early lead, only for substitute Dwight Yorke to level.

Matthew Upson's second half header put Blues ahead, but Nicky Butt's acrobatic volley earned Newcastle a well-deserved point on their travels.

It could have been better for Newcastle with Laurent Robert's long-range free kick catching everyone by surprise, but smashing the face of a post and bouncing clear.

A committed first half had seen Birmingham lose two key players through injury - but cancel out Jenas' early strike through Yorke.

It had taken Newcastle just three minutes to open the scoring, when Patrick Kluivert shot ricocheted kindly for Jenas who side-footed home confidently from eight yards.

An injury to Heskey saw Yorke make an early arrival to the game from the substitutes bench, and he was just too short to get his head to a curling Robbie Savage free-kick.

Souness famously fell out with Yorke whilst Blackburn boss, and another of the players he had argued with at Ewood, David Dunn, turned provider for the diminutive striker's leveller.

Dunn picked out the perfect pass for Yorke to run on to after Andy O'Brien's poor attempt to catch him offside. Despite dallying over his shot Yorke got lucky when the ball deflected off O'Brien's outstretched foot and in between Shay Given's legs before hitting the back of the net.

The Birmingham defence were doing a fine job of keeping Alan Shearer and Patrick Kluivert quiet, but the latter indicated his fine form with a clever header that just lacked the power to defeat Maik Taylor.

Birmingham had a shout for a penalty denied, when Stephen Carr appeared to shove Yorke in the box at the critical moment, but they lost influential midfielder Muzzy Izzet when his late and high tackle on Olivier Bernard left the Frenchman outraged, and the Turkish international in agony.

The second half started with Kluivert being replaced by James Milner - the Dutchman picking up a hamstring injury.

Savage's set pieces had given Newcastle problems all day, and his fine delivery was inch perfect for Upson to head home and give the hosts the lead on 57 minutes.

Newcastle were in determined mood however and clawed the match level when Blues could only half clear a hopeful ball into the box, and Butt produced an acrobatic volley that flashed into the back of the net.

Dunn saw a clever run and cut-back cut out in the six yard box and Savage hit the outside of a post with a fine volley that had left Given a spectator.

Jamie Clapham cleared crucially off the line after Craig Bellamy had headed back into a crowded six-yard box whilst Given had to be alert when Savage won a drop-ball on the edge of the box and Yorke had a snap shot that looked destined for the top corner before the Irish keeper got a hand to it.

Given produced another fine save to deny Dunn's downward header, clawing the ball away, but it was Robert who came closest to giving the game a winner, when his free-kick - from seemingly well outside shooting distance - struck the post with Taylor beaten.

Bernard contract wrangle rumbles on

Olivier Bernard is still at loggerheads with Newcastle over his new contract - with the two sides seemingly as far apart as ever.

The Magpies insist there is a fair offer on the table for Bernard, but he has hit back saying the club are showing him a lack of "respect" in their dealings with him.

Bernard, out of contract next summer, will be able to talk to other clubs in January should a new deal not be agreed before then, and the Frenchman is not short of admirers at home and abroad having established himself as United's first-choice left back.

He said: "The way they are treating me over the contract shows they have no respect for me - that's something I really don't like.

"They don't understand what I want. I'd love to stay at the club but I don't want to waste my time. I think I've proved to that club what I can do. If they don't want me, they should say it."

Bernard destined not to get a new contract.

A very boring game imo. How does Jenas still get a game? He's utter shite.

Supposedly Shearer, Bellamy and Kluivert all starting, and Kluivert was supposedly world class the other night. There will be a few goals, it really all boils down to our defence. A Bolton win though is probably on the cards due to Newcastles defence.
