I am very much so about little government intervention in peoples every day lives, but I know that full on free market capitalism does not work either if we don't want to be reamed over the coals with no choice.

The "locally funded" part is why the school system is still ridiculously uneven. I actually support national standards and a national education system. Why should kids in Massachusetts get a good education while kids in Alabama get a shitty one? Makes no sense to me...
