Your joints can take it so long as you build them up to that point before you go nuts with you running. From my experience, the joints just take a lot longer to build up than, say, your leg muscles or your heart.
The younger you are when you start building strong joints, the better. You can assist the process with things like flax seed oil, Omega 3/6 oils, etc.
I grew up running around in the woods, playing soccer, and rollerblading, so my joints have never been a problem (knock on wood).
