Yes. That in and of itself is entirely possible. However, the fact that the US "staged" an elaborate covert ops mission into Pakistan on a completely arbitrary date, just to fake the capture and/or killing of Osama bin Laden is far-fetched to say the least. Why would they do this now? Why not wait until a couple months before the 2012 election? What you're suggesting went down just doesn't make any sense. They could have much more easily flattened his compound with a missile, said he was there, and accomplished the same thing. The main difference here is that in a missile strike, the body would have probably been destroyed beyond recognition, so it would be a bit more difficult to positively ID a subject from samples of blood or flesh that have been dug out from a massive pile of rubble. |
1) Neither of us really know how "elaborate" the staged part was. But like I said, those are details. Maybe they did require some time and effort, but compared to the benefits they were small.
2) America is going through a tough time financially and economically. Morale is low and people are doubting the competence of Obama more than ever (or at least before this event). You make the point that he would have waited till right before the election, but there are many points for why that is a bad idea. For example it would be much more suspicious, waiting could have risked the news being exposed prematurely, or simply because when you have an ace up your sleeve you always have the urge to throw it down.
3)Flattening his compound with a missile would be a terrible idea.
