ps. ive always liked this quote.

quote:
"The Balkan countries are seen as culprits who force the reluctant powers into their unfathomable conflicts. This imagined Balkans - a world where people are motivated not by rational consideration but by a mysterious congenital bloodthirstiness - is always invoked when the great powers seek to deny their responsibility for the economic and political difficulties that the region has suffered as a consequence of external differences."

And if you REALLY take a look a good look at history you see this to be true.

Before the 20th century, Croatia and Serbia had never actually engaged in a war with eachother. In fact they had even co-operated with one another during the revolutionary years of 1848/49. The most recent war's were seen as ancient renewal's of hostilities but this couldnt have been further from the truth, it was only until this century that they started fighting against eachother (thanks to the help of the growing rise in Cro/Serb nationalism which came to the forefront in the late 19th century from the likes of Karadzic + Starcevic and the manipulation of foreign powers).

I'm not picking at anyone here, so Srbi please, dont take this persoanlly as i'm being as diplomatic as possible.
Margs, Slovenia and Croatia were the first to break away as they never wanted to be a part of Yugoslavia in the first place.
Although the primary differences are religious, it is by no means the only difference.

A little more historical Margs, and a way to get an idea of cultural differences, is the fact Slovenia and Croatia
were an integral part of the Austro-Hungarian empire and even architecturally look a LOT like Budapest and Vienna.

The others are much more eastern-like in these same areas because of their close ties to the Byzantines.

Writing : Slovenia and Croatia use Roman , Serbia, MN, and Macedonia cyrillic.

These generally are major differences and i havent even touched the tip of the iceberg...

And as said earlier, Kosovo and Vojvodina have never had the status of these aforementioned nations and were always provinces of Serbia.

I read the wiki before posting my questions. It just seems to me that the area was already so divided. Maybe a better way would be to make Serbia and Montenegro one country (they already do a lot of stuff together, Olympics, beauty pagents) and just leave Kosovo out. Lol, I know it wouldn't work cuz no one wants to give up their independence and land area. But maybe it would work!

In a way it's funny, you have Slovenes saying that they have more in common with Western Europeans than with Central Europeans. Macedonians say they belong to the Meditteranean culture. Bosnia has distinct near Eastern characteristics while Serbians gravitate toward Orthodox countries, especially Russia. Even within Serbia, Vojvodina is by some regarded as Central European, Serbia proper Eastern European, and Kosovo near Eastern. It is therefore not surprising that the peoples of the former Yugoslavia did not have a strong sense of traditional bonding.

They did exist as a state union, basically the last vestige of the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, but in 2006 they voted on a successful independant movement.

To all the Canadians and whoever else NOT from the Balkans your intentions and ideals are great.
But you have to understand...the reality is, that the Balkans will NEVER be completely calm.
Theres too much history, too much anger, too much sorrow, and ppl here are FULL of passion that is hard for us from the West to grasp.
Unfortunately this passion surfaces most easily through hatred and animosity.

Fuck man, there's just not enuff LOVE

Vrk, love ya, and wish everyone could have the same mentality as you.....and what you said is the true reality of the situation.
I'm just as PASSIONATE as you are about Cro, definitley NOT through animosity! Everyone just has to learn to disagree because, let's face it, we're all stubborn LOL It's the dalmatinka in me

This is the sad thing - this DID happen and that's what the most recent war there was all about - Croatia DEFENDING it's OWN country for FREEDOM. Let's hope history NEVER repeats itself again!!

It didn't make me angry, you can't blame everyone based on a few dickhead's pathetic behaviour. It was uncalled for, and the more I saw the footage on the news the more I realised, like Vrk said, these tensions will probably never cease, which is pretty sad.
What they do, they do themselves and opening past wounds will not solve their problems or lead a good example for generations to come.

You mean Slovakia? You're not confusing it with Slovenia (as commonly happens), are you? I think that Czech Republic is predominantly Catholic too, although I think that people in neither put all that big a weight on official religous denomination (at least that's my impression), so if the Polish connect with the Slovaks well because of that they should connect with the Czechs likewise...

Anyways, I wanted to ask my 'friends' here on TA - Ambercrombie, afthrsgurl and 8Wonders - if you go eat cevapcici someday, can I come too? Can I? Can I? I wanna try it too if it's not beaf or pork...
