Dude when u listen to expander in 98,99 when trance was very epic and melodic.... Expander was very progressive sounding compared to other trance. usually played by other progressive djs at that time. Progressive is always on the move to change its sound...and ur reaction of my expander example geez bro dont shit a brick!!!

Maybe that was a little harsh but I feel very strongly about this subject here. And I want to make sure we are on the same page. I agree that progressive is always evolving but so is trance. Really my frustration lies in your saying that progressive is a style that is so elusive and constantly changing that it is not only hard to define, but also could not possibly be boring. This view of yours is simply not true. Progressive is a genre, plain and simple. Therefore it is possible that it could become mainstream and get overpalyed, and thus be cheesy at some point. That is just how music works, and not just music, this applies to anything type of media that goes mainstream.

I hope that Oakie loses popularity. But then again it would be nice to see him live one more time.

Why would you want him to fail? He is one of trance's founding fathers!

why do i hear echoes in this thread

Armin Van was always popular he will never lose popularity IMO
Same with Ferry etc
Tiesto is really doing the madonna thing. Everyone hated him when he changed genres but seems to love him now.
Orkidea is putting out quality of that late 1999 & 2000 style tiesto/armin trance and is getting really popular with it, he is in.
Nick Warren style is getting really popular.

I dont think DJ Jean was even popular already.... lost it ages ago.
And i dont see the magic in PvD... he's a tight dj but nothing magical.

Lots of DJs who play big beats and danceable tunes are coing more into the picture. The ppl want bigger basslines and something to dance to. Take for example the house scene, reviving that crappy disco house with flowing basslines etc is all coming back in.

Also another thing that gets ppl dancing is Energy-Trance (at least i like to call it that) and a perfect song to illustrate this would be System F - Exhale. When DJs spin a style lke this that has so much energy, people love it.

The DJs that arent going to fit into these styles very well arent going to be liked by the crowd and arent going to become very popular.

peace...

I would have to agree with Slinky, why would you WANT to see him fall? Are you nuts!?

And since Sasha seems to think Danny Teneglia is the best DJ in the world, something tells me he will continue to please audiences all over the world for a long time...

And in addition...The DJ MAKES the club great, not the other way around.

What a cool thread! Wish I'd been on here last year to shoot my mouth off then ... oh well better late than never.

OK here's what I see for next year ... (this is only from the UK/Europe point of view, I don't know enough about the American scene to comment so my forecast for you lot is that Destiny's Child will be remixed by Darude and it will be the only song that gets played throughout 2002, plus Sonique's collaboration with Eminem )

My summary of 2001 :

1. The UK Garage and Hard House fashions have been and gone now. I'm not really sure where the band wagon jumpers will go next but keep an eye on the cover of Ministry magazine around about March or April to determine what's going to sell millions of MoS compilations in the summer. The hard house and garage scenes won't die like everyone says (remember they said the same about trance 18 months ago??!!), but they'll certainly go fairly deep underground for another few years until the wheel spins again.

2. Prog has been the big trance sound of 2001 and it's going to keep on going fairly strong for a lot of next year. However, over the last 3 or 4 months of 2001 we've finally started to hear quality uplifting on the radio again ... not the brash 1999 stuff but the really cool, subtle uplifting sounds like Rapture and the vocal mix of Stringer.

My 10 predictions for 2002 :

1. Uplifting will continue it's slow revival, although I still don't think it will become as fashionable as it was in 1999 ... that's more of a long term 2003 - 2004 prediction. When it DOES happen, the people that lead the uplifting charge are NOT gonna be the hoary old '99ers like Tiesto, Ferry or even Paul van Dyk (sorry guys!), it's going to be the more subtle sounds of people like Dumonde, Riva, iio and most likely a bunch of other producers none of us have even heard of at the moment.

2. Needless to say, huge flame wars will rage on TA about whether it can possibly be called uplifting if PvD or DJ bloody Tiesto didn't produce it / remix it / spin it but the smart people will get on with the serious business of getting caned and dancing to it.

3. Prog will continue to attract a loyal following, and will be on the up particularly in the USA this year, but it will be on the slide in the UK, mainly because all the big prog DJ's will be over touring the 'states getting their big pay cheques.

4. Tiesto will also spend most of his time touring in the states and spinning the same records he's been doing all year, when he should be sitting on his ass in his Dutch studio churning out new music. He'll be widely considered a Jules-style joke in about 18 months time.

5. The big Ibiza trends this year are going to be tribal house (for the serious-music-listener brigade) and breakbeat (for the fluffy bra'n'hot pants fraternity). The neverending assault of cheezy pop-dance aka Sophie Ellis Bextor and bullshit Roger Sanchez US house will continue as well.

6. Oakie will become cool again in Ibiza in 2002 but he'll be spinning slower, more breakbeat sets with a smattering of nu-school trance. He'll still get a hammering on TA from the young 'uns who don't understand that he's moved on from super epic 1999 stuff and doesn't intend to come back.

7. Turf wars amongst Ibiza promoters this summer will finally end in someone being shot (I'm amazed it didn't happen last year!). A couple of the big clubs will be shut down by the Spanish police, some tourists will be drug busted and the whole thing will leave a bad taste in everyone's mouth. By 2003, Ibiza will have become a tacky, lager lout holiday destination like Tenerife.

8. Yet another fucking Global Underground DJ will win the DJ mag top 100

9. Producers / DJ's on the up :
- AvB
- Airscape
- Lange
- Dumonde
- Yahel

10. Producers / DJ's on the slide :
- Tiesto
- BT
- Judge Jules
- Paul van Dyk
- Push

If you don't like Oakenfold's new stuff, and you feel like you are loosing him. Do as I do. Just bring back those good memories (or mp3 files) from his great essential mix worldtour year back in 1999. Those were the years. =)

greetz =)

Excellent predictions - I am from the US and prog is exploding here. It sure would be a shame to see Tiesto be a laughing stock but maybe thats what it will take to get him back in the studio. Hope we don't really have to wiat 18 months though. Urban Train was one of the best tracks of the year. Would love to hear more out of that guy. And one last thing - don't be mad if GU dj's win the top 100 again. They are the Best. Well in my opinion at least, I should be interested to see what Dave Seaman has in store for the next episode of their fantastic series.
