I'm a bit confused. I know you mix using the PC, but what are these "final scratch records"?

Edit OK so maybe you don't mix using the PC (been reading the site ) but now I'm confused as to how you can use the FS vinyls to mix the wav files.

again.

Ok, heres how it works.
Hardware:

You have a traditional DJ set up with 2 turntables and a mixer (with line and phono inputs). With FinalScratch you get a peice of equipment called a ScratchAmp (SA), which is basically two USB soundcards. You plug the turntables into the SA's phono inputs, and then plug its phono outputs into your mixers normal phono inputs. Then you plug in the SA line-level outputs into the mixers line-level inputs (line-level is used for CD decks normally). Then you place a Finalscratch record on each of the turntables. These records contain timecode data, same thing that basically tells how to sync audio and video in film editing (SMPTE or sumtin liek that??? mind you this has nothing to do with video). If you where to listen to these records straight off via a phono input it would sound like an old dial up modem, thats the digital information of the needles postition being played via an analog tone.

Ok now for the computer part.

You install a striped down version of Debian Linux OS onto a virtual partition (its not a true partition, but a partition stored in a file on a FAT32 partitioned hard drive). You boot up into the FS OS and then run the FS app. It loads up with a filelist and two "decks" then you map a song to either one of those decks, drop the needle on the record, and if your mixer is set to line-in then you will here whatever would be playing from that point on that real record. In reality tho, all the record is sending back is information about the needles position on the record, like 05:02:432 or 5 minutes, 2 seconeds, and 432 frames. That signal is intercepted by the SA and sent to the computer via the USB cable, where it gets decoded, and then the software sends that part of the mp3 thru the USB cable to the SA where one of the soundcards (depending on right or left deck) sends it to the mixer. Playing a normal record is easy, just drop a normal vinyl on there and set your mixers input to phono, there is a bypass on the SA that sends to the mixer.

General time for this whole process to complete is between 8 and 16ms.

I have used FS for almost a year and have had very few complaints. Going to go see PVD at FreakNight 7 on Halloween and hope to hear it on a massive system.

Anyways hope this cleared stuff up, for any more info email or PM me.

Great! Thanks for clearing that up

Can we move this to the DJ Booth. I'm afraid that this thread will get swamped by all of the music discussion threads. This thread will stay up longer in the DJ Booth.

I just think that this has mostly turned into a bunch of information on Final Scratch and would be of more benefit to those browsing through the DJ booth.

Just a suggestion...
