actually Shawn if u want my honest opinion, i think u should just forget about it. Remember that i do live in scarborough and well.. it's is a very good place for such music to rise and become very popular. I see 13 year olds blasting CDs to artists they don't even know just cuz they saw the music video on BET or MuchMusic. I see thugs, i see teenagers, i see regular ppl, bussiness men in suits.. and i hear their headphones blasting various hiphop and RnB.
does it bother me that so many ppl listen to it? no
does it make a difference if they listened to anything else? not likely
does it make me feel any better if they listened to anything other than top40/hiphop/rnb? i wouldn't think so
MY POINT IS: what difference does it make if they listened to anything else?
all i know is my favourite record shop sells electronic music, i know where to find it in Toronto, i know the ppl that listen to it, i'm exposed to the scene that welcomes such music and i know my speakers never play anything other than electronic dance music.
AND if all goes bad, the scene flops cuz of some government action, or if my fav record shop goes bankrupt, or a combination of all the above, it wont change the fact that i still have access to it.
LET THE PPL WHO WANT TO LISTEN, LISTEN. Music is not the issue. It's the relization that we have to respect everyone's taste of music regardless. As long as u don't go around bragging about listening to a certain type of music, u wouldn't see alotta ignorant atitude.

i didn't ask u to do that either. I don't see how my music prefrence could arise unless someone asked me. Yes, i do have loud headphones but i don't walk around talking to ppl i just met saying "hey, i listen to trance.. blah blah blah"
above all that when the situation arises, if the person has respect, nevermind respect for a certain genere, then he or she will respect your musical taste no matter how bizzare it sounds to them. From what u've told us, i don't think she has alotta respect for anything or anyone. AND AGAIN this is one case out of many that tend to be ignorant. MSN comes with a great feature and it's called BLOCK.. ICQ has an ignore list as well. Most common IM softwares have this feature as well. Become familiar on how to use these features and i'm sure u'll be fine in the future
edit: actually there is a story i told Nat about the other day which is quiet typical.
On campus, chillin with a buddy, some girl he knew walked by and they chatted for a bit. So she turns around and goes "oh Hi! what are u listening to?" so i tell her the DJ and the set that was playing, knowing the fact that i might get flamed if i blurted out trance but i dunno.... she insisted on finding out the genere. So it went something like this:
"oh Hi! what are u listening to?"
"live sets from System VIP room... some of my buddies spun there just this weekend. i didn't get a chance to go so i'm going through them rite now"
"here let me listen"
"are u sure? ok if u insist" <---- only if i knew what to come next
"sounds like the euro stuff my brother would listen to. Ok this sounds too repetetive.. all sounds the same don't u get bored?"
"no it's not actually called euro, it's called trance/progressive/house. I haven't heared what ur brother listened to so ican't say much. And no, i don't get bored... there is actually variations in the track if u listen to it carefully. It's not just the same loop over and over, it's a set of loops."
"woah.. don't u need E or some other drug to listen to trance and euro and that other stuff? i mean how can u listen to it? what's that other drug called?"
"it's actually quiet simple! u put on ur headphones and u press play! and no u don't have to be on E to listen to anything since ur ears work just fine without the intervension of any form of drugs. i love it well enough to spin it...this stuff actually is interesting if u have the aptitude to understand how it's layed out"
"so do u make any of it?"
"no, i just spin it.. i'll produce after i graduate and i have some spare money and time"
"so u pretty much get those tracks and put them all together and call it ur work? isn't that like copyright laws being broken?"
"have u ever been to any clubs?"
"what does that relate to copyrights?"
"have u been to a club? yes or no?"
"a few times here and there."
"then don't talk shit if u don't know shit...execuse me, i have a physics class to go to"
