the elitism is dance music is what keeps it as an art form in the "joke" status with the rest of the world.

i, for one, would like no part in that.

Actually Dave. I'd say that if dance music is considered a joke art form by the rest of the world. It's not because of elitism. It's because to get paid $20,000 a gig to simply play mostly someone elses music in a club, doesn't put you in the same league as U2. The people who create the music are the artists and until they get the recognition by the DJ's who make thousands off them they'll continue to be the "joke" that to make reference to. Dave, do you actually go out to clubs to see how things have changed so much recently in the dance music scene? Do you see how it becomes harder for college kids to drop $25 in cover and buy $5 beers or $8 mixed drinks, when I would pay $5 to $10 and $3 beers just 3 years ago in Chicago. This has occured because of the cost to bring in dj's and I think the scene is going back to cheaper local talent. Which is very evident in Chicago. I don't mean to point things to you, but it seemed odd that you get very little constructive talk about you and too much "Dave sucks as a DJ." You've obviously worked hard to get where you are, but to go on saying what have YOU done to help the scene and why is it so bad that someone got successful in music and made a lot of people happy, only shows that you might be the elite one. It makes you come off bad. Maybe you should put yourself in the place of the people who pay for you to have a career.

agree all you want - it's business 101, man. the price of something is what the market will bear. it doesn't mean it's right or wrong. it's just what is.

Dave...my rant is just rant of thoughts I have about the club scene in America (Chicago). I don't blame the DJ's for getting every dollar they can. My issue is mostly with promoter's that pay such high fees rather than working hard to promote nights with lesser known acts that they could then charge a lower cover to allow more clubbers on limited budget to attend events on a regular weekly or bi-weekly basis. For years in Chicago I saw most every big and not-so-big DJ for $10 or less. These events were packed. Now you will pay no less then $20 for any DJ and bigger ones more. Turnout over the past few years has really gone down for all but the top 10 DJ's in the world. It's my opinion that the cost of going out once or twice every week has gone up so much (due to rising DJ rates and possibly greedy promoters and club owners) that building a successful club scene has become difficult. It sucks to go out for a very good DJ, only to see a easily half empty room. This is the case in Chicago right now. You'll see for yourself in a month and I'd look forward to see your honest opinion then.

Business 101 includes more than just getting what the market will bear. It's about getting people to return to your business on a regular basis, to be loyal customers. A business will be more successful over the long haul with a large group of loyal customers than it will with customers that can only buy what you are selling on a limited basis.
