I don't kow what it is that SF promoters do but they sure are getting a serious amount of talent running through town.

I need to move over there fast!

Anyone got a spare room ?!?!

Well, there are two main promoters. Spundae & Release...

Of COURSE you know who Spundae is...it is probably the biggest club promoter in the US with weeklys in SF, LA, Chicago, Houston, Las Vegas, and Cleveland, and have numerous events in places such as Seattle and Miami.

Spundae is based out of San Francisco and has one of the coolest promoter owners around, Guiv....so of course we get a good share of stuff through them. Spundae has "Sonic Spundae" on Friday nights at the big club in town here, 1015 Folsom.

Release isn't as big, but is surely well-known and world renound for bringing in talent. Release has Saturdays with "Release" @ 1015 Folsom and they also have Friday nights with "Square" @ the other big club in town, Ruby Skye (nominated for best club venue in the Dance Star awards, but I hate the crowd here so much that I try to avoid it...probably one of the nicest clubs you'lle ver see, though).

Release used to book every big DJ they brought in at 1015 Folsom, but it's changed over recent months. Now they book most of their big stuff at Ruby Skye on Fridays nights, competing directly with Spundae.

This is because of two reasons mainly..

1) With the reopening of Giant @ Avalon last year in LA, LA now has two HUGE clubs/promoters operating on Saturdays nights in LA -- that being Spundae & Giant.
2) The crowd at 1015 in the main room is more of a "there for the music" crowd than "there to be seen crowd" ... so there is no guaranteed large crowd on any night at 1015. The nice thing about this crowd is that when it's packed, it's a real good crowd who appreciates the music. The bad thing, the place can be dead empty sometimes.

Ruby Skye is completely different -- it is full of a bunch of fakes who go there to drink, grab asses, and dance no matter what the music is and is always pretty full. I've seen numerous huge DJs play there and will be asked by tons of people "who is that DJ playing" ... like WHAT THE FUCK, YO!?!!??! Anyhow, as I said, very nice club but annoying as hell/fake crowd which just irritates me and irritates everyone who goes to the clubs for the music. BUUUTTT, it's a guaranteed crowd and a guaranteed money maker so Release is booking more there on Friday nights.

I must thank them for bringing PvD back to 1015 in May....he played at Ruby in November and it was bleh....PvD didn't even like it that much. He LOOVVEESSS 1015 (he has said so himself).

Ruby Skye also books decent DJs on its own on Saturdays night, but it's in spurts.

The other big clubs which isn't used nearly enough is The Mezzanine....Spundae has held special events there in the past and it's where Tiesto tends to play. INSANE sound system (one of the best on the west coast). I've heard Sasha, Tiesto (twice), Chemical Brothers, and others there....all Spundae events. I've been there for other nights, too. I love the place -- kick ass sound and feels so underground.

Damn you're quick!

Never been clubbing in SF but visited there a couple of times. You can tell what Ruby Skye is like just from looking at the outside - from what you've said I guess I was right - mind you I went to some bar around the corner from there called the Red Wood Rooms(I think? - it was in some hotel) and I swear they had one of the hottest servers I have ever seen - got the wife good and mad.

Hoping to come visit in April and May - Armin vs Marcus Schulz and then for Tall Paul - birthday bash for me! - Have to visit when an Englishman is there seeing as I am a Brit myself.

SF seems to have a good scene though - makes me really want to leave SC in a hurry - unfortunately SF seems like an expensive place to live so I'd better get the dollars saved up first.

Thanks for all the information man,

Tom

1. You got it about Ruby Skye -- here's how clueless the people are there and how music-knowing people try to avoid that place...last summer when PvD played at 1015, there was like an hour wait for the preorders to get in (not to mention I have never, ever seen a club so packed...like, it took 15-20 minutes to wiggle your way through the dance floor from one side to the other -- it was horrible!!!)....when PvD played at RS in November, there was NO wait...like, we walked up and got right now...not one person in front of us. Make it worse, the whole place was dead empty until about 10 minutes before PvD came on and then the place just seemed to get full (I think it was more of security was told to just let people start flowing in and quickly pay and stuff because they didn't want the place open for when PvD was coming on.

2. Yes, it's called the Redwood Room at the Clift Hotel...very nice, but expensive place. Love the pictures on the walls....

3. Yes yes, you should come for Markus and AvB

In the meantime, I have added the following to the calendar in a second update for today!

Feb 20 - Update #2

May 15 - D:Fuse @ Release (1015 Folsom)
Jun 29 - D:Fuse @ Release (1015 Folsom)
Aug 07 - D:Fuse @ Release (1015 Folsom)

No dress code.

28th is Jerry Bonham (and Kramer)...if you like Prog House, you would LOVE Jerry Bonham...highly regarded. Could be huge, but has chosen not to be. He's sick, dude. Kramer is pretty good, too.

Dave

It sucks that all of these clubs are 21 and over. Why oh why is the US drinking policy sooo stupid.
