I thought the one the guy did in Reason sounded as good (in a different way) than the original. And seeing how much gear wavemaker et al used to make the original, just goes to show you - don't get hung up on sound. It's the music and arrangement that matters - i.e. the parts.

I learned this the hard way. Agonizing over a sound will not contribute to the success of a production nearly as much as we producers think it will.

I agree with some of your points, but, the orginal sounds much better than anything reason can make, including that sample. There is no substitute for hardware. It sounds better than any vst currently available. I've heard both vsti and hardware synths like the jp, virus, nordlead, supernova, etc.. and these synths have state of the art sound. Wide, vivid, warm, creamy, makes your body shiver when you listen to these mighty synths.

Now I agree with you that you can have the best synths in the world but if your productions suck, the tune will suck. And not all sound is the same, I'm fed up with these dudes using crap ass vsts trying to emulate hardware like a jp supersaw or the latest virus mod for the zeta . Sure you can make nice pads or leads with vsts as state and others have shown, but hardware sounds different and its easily recognizable in a track.

Vsti is the poor mans substitute for hardware. In a few months i'll be switching to hardware and ill post a little comparision of my productions before and after hardware. You'll be surprised.

Cheers

Thanks for the comments trancenergy69. I agree, even though I have no experience in comparing hardware vs soft-synths. Nevertheless, it just makes sense - hardware designed to do one thing should do it better than a PC spitting out audio through a sound card.

But I'm sure many will disagree.

Now here's a real subjective question - which hardware are you currently liking? I'm really impressed with the ION, since I come from a "real" analog background. But of course everyone seems to be stuck on the Virus. What's your opinion?

Thanks!

I havent had any experience with hardware, sadly, but of the few VSTis I have played with - z3ta, and its virus mod are two of the best. I have heard the virus sample mp3s on virus.info, and yeah they are awesome, but the VSTis are the closest i will be to the real deal for a very long time!

Anyway, I've heard stuff you have done on virtual instruments and its awesome! Just think your comment above was very harsh on what is an excellent mod!

Just to let everyone here know, that software isn't that far behind hardware. I own a virus and I often turn to softies for tracks. Hardware can make shite sounds too you know. They can take a bit of learning to understand how to get the right sound out of them, escpecially in the virus. Its not like three saw waves will sound better than three saw waves in pro-53. Its once you start putting in LFOs and PWM and Delay and oscillation modulation and FM and ring mod and unison/unison detune and Sub-oscillators that you start getting sounds that are exceptionally better than software.

With the right effects though, softies can put up one hell of a fight. There are plenty of tracks out there that are made on software and you wouldn't even know unless you were told.

IN RELATION TO THIS THREAD, guys, heaps of you are using the midi file supplied. Just to let you know, it needs to be moved back like 1/8th note or something to make it fit in with the kick properly. Some of you have got it wrong, if you care that is. Haven't listened to all of them
