It's really sad to see the migration away from turntables. People complain about how expensive turntables and vinyls and what not are but the reality is all the technology that is coming to replace it will be even more so. Final scratch is a bit of a hybrid technology which is mating the old with the new, it's not exactly cheap either.

It's insane to think that when everything goes digital (optical format is likely) that prices of records will go down. It will just mean more money for the record companies.

Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of people in the dance scene that own and operate record labels because they love the music, but their ranks will probably dwindle in the future. People who are disassociated via generations forget what a movement is all about, they lose their heart in it, their passion to continue it unscathed. While I sound like I'm being extremely dramatic with all this "gloom and doom" omg the world is going to end bs... I think if you look to the rest of the industry it proves to be the supporting anecdote to my statement.

I'd like to think things are getting better and music will start getting cheaper and more widely distributed but I'm skeptical. I think we are living in the golden age of [free] information exchange. Software and Hardware manufacturers are all realizing the flaws in their system and are moving to correct them. Digital Rights Management is here now, it's real and it's only a glimpse of things to come. Mark my words, 15 years from now there will not be an unregulated corner of the internet.

The few people who just want to get their music out and have people enjoy it will have their voices drowned in the shouts of the capitalistic majority.

We aren't getting any freer... I'm digressing.



COnclusion:

On one hand it's good to see things progressing but on the other it's sad to see people break away from the roots. In the future - there will be no turntables or DJs. Only robots with jukeboxes!!!!

Anyone that is investing the money to get Final Scratch probably wouldn't be the type to spin MP3s at a club anyhow... like everyone has said, MP3s don't have the audio fidelity to be played on a loud club system. What makes you think DJs won't buy records anymore? Don't you see how the iTunes is working? They're selling compressed audio on the internet and people buy it! If companies were to charge the same price on a vinyl as they would for a digital wav/aiff, why not? There will probably be some better security features in the future to prevent piracy, just nobody has come up with a way to do it yet... but it'll come around.

Btw, if you were a world travelling DJ and had gigs night after night and had to lug around 40+ vinyls and 50+ CDs, wouldn't you love the convenience of just lugging around a laptop instead? And while you're on the road away from your local record shops and are constantly flying, would you find the time to be able to go to find a record shop in the town that you're playing in before the performance and try to get new records? << That's one lone run-on sentence...

If that's your argument, I'm surprised I haven't seen you handing out bashing rounds to DJs who use CDRs and accusations of them "killing the DJ culture", as they can download an mp3 and play it out just as much as a DJ using Final Scratch can. Not that it's gonna sound any better than someone playing an mp3 off of a Powerbook, but hey I guess since all of your DJ heroes use CDRs, that's quite ok.

Yeah i'm sure someone who doesnt want to pay money for music will pay 1000 euros for technics ("all the good djs are using them"), a sick amount of money for a pioneer mixer ("all the good djs are using them"), then another 700 euros for finalscratch, and finally will invest in a notebook if they don't have one already....

I love Final Scratch!!! The windows xp version for Final Scratch will be released this month and it'd cause less conflicts with installation so for those who has been waiting ... it's almost here. Fortunately Linux system works fine for me at the moment.
