Psygnosis - Creative Labs design sound cards for games and watching DVDs, not audio production.
The main reason for their poor performance is that they don't have ASIO drivers which means that you will get severly bad latency.

You can find ASIO drivers that I think were programmed by a 3rd party but its a much better idea to buy a sound card that was built for production purposes.

The Audiophile isn't your only option but for an entry level card its received quite good feedback from those who use it.
Another option you may consider is to get a Firewire unit which you can plug into any PC or Mac for additional sound processing, they are more expensive though.

If you are going to use your PC for general use and games then having a sound card integrated onto your motherboard can be handy for some surround sound but unless you're a hardcore gamer you probably won't care.

having n audigy 2. i think they're quite capable.

24 bit/96khz play back. though it doesn't record with that same quality :/ card comes with asio drivers [least i think, unless i installed some kx ones a while back that my memory fails to remember] which provides latency of 10ms on the busiest of tunes. it can get get to 2-5ms with simpler tunes. taking into account i have half a gig of ram and a p4 processor however. 10ms isnt so much fun with the midi keyboard/controllers however, but its doable.

the creative cards aren't that bad. depends on what you want. install a 6.1 speaker system on it, and you're laughing. but if ur primarily focusing on production, then invest in something else.

as cliched as it may be
its the cook not the kitchen.
so make do with what you can or what's within ur budget.

edit:

sorry cam, didn't buy the card online.
literally picked it up overseas.

Creative Audigy 2 - $180
M-Audio Audiophile 2496 - $200-220 from US

If you're considering production don't even think twice

Since most decent motherboards have 5.1/6.1 sound integrated you can always disable one of them depending on what your using it for

10ms latency would have me wanting to stab people

This site has the Audiophile for $149.95, they ship overseas but you gotta photocopy your credit card and ID and stuff.. too much trouble i think.

But im looking at Online Australian sites and they have the Audiophile from 600 dollars upward.

Maybe not such a bad idea i think from the above site.

Though Ebay Australia have it for AUS$320

Thanx everyone for your suggestions

You're correct, they stopped making them back in the ISA cards, and had a 3rd party building that part of their audio processor.

muli: are u using your card for MIDI? If not the card is fine, it's the MIDI side of things their cards suck dick on.
