and this is what he had to say about Edmonton..
In late January I missed a gig in Edmonton Canada as a result of snow in the UK, and Thursday April 1st was the re-scheduled visit. For a major city Edmonton’s poorly served with direct flights from US gateways, and my only option was an 8am flight to Seattle. This left me with only 2 hours sleep after my set. Post 9/11, US airport security remains stringent, and for some reason I’m always flagged up for special security screening, meaning that it’s sensible to arrive at least two hours before your flight.
It was three hours to Seattle where I had a three and a half hour layover, followed by a two hour flight to Edmonton, so having left at 8am, I didn’t arrive in Canada til 5pm. On my Horizon airlines flight I glanced at its “Edmonton city guide in the inflight mag and learnt that the Canadian city is home to the World’s largest shopping mall. Checking my notes on arrival I discovered that lo-and-behold, my gig was in a club attached to the mall. Talk about a shopaholic’s dream engagement.
We’re not talking any old Mall. Housing an indoor aquarium with dolphins and a submarine ride, an I-Max cinema, a gigantic water park, not to mention almost 1000 stores, Edmonton West Mall also housed its own 20 storey hotel “Fantasyland. As a frequent traveller, the features I look for in a hotel are as follows… 24 hour room service (useful when coming in after playing a late set), Broadband internet access, a gym, and preferably a shower that’s separate from the bath.
Fantasyland had no broadband access, no mini-bar, no 24 hour room service, but did have a gigantic Jacuzzi in the middle of the bedroom with mirrors on the ceiling. If I was a porn star not a dj I would have been in my element. As it was, all I wanted was a drink of something non-alcoholic to rehydrate after my set, plus broadband access to answer the huge stack of your emails I receive daily. Having said that, it was a five minute stumble from the club so the promoter’s choice of hotel was well-appreciated.
I’ve never done a bad gig in Canada, and from the moment we arrived via the mall and hit the club through a back entrance it was clear that things weren’t about to change. I was a little tentative that my failure to show on the previous occasion might have taken its toll on ticket sales, but there was no need to worry. The atmosphere was excellent, and I was safely ensconced back in bed at Fantasyland ten minutes after spinning my final track
