Lets face it, all the massive disasters and special effects are big and exciting and good to watch (for most of us anyway), and it is a movie, so they have created a fictional story BUT it is based on an element of truth. The element of truth is that global warming is occurring, it is heating up the atmosphere, and humans are contrubuting to global warming through the release of greenhouse gases. The message behind the film is a warning about the dangers of global warming.

I will be going to see this soon, just because i love a big, special-effects filled action movie, and it seems like quite an entertaining film. Not a "good" film as such, but an entertaining film nevertheless.

I will probably wait till i see Troy first though.

yeah..movie sucked pretty much..i have a few questions if you meteorolgy wizards could answer me i would be happy =)

1. I thought that the cold/warm water currents were the important thing, not salt or sweet water..

2.Where the hell that tidal wave came from? A wave of that height could only be originated by a meteorite impact..or a hell of a big earthquake..i mean..the water level didn't even rose a bit..a wave that big is crap

3.I was arguing with my friends, that the ozone layers only protects our planet from hazardous radiations, but the fools kept telling that it also cooled down earth..who's correct?

I think that's it for now =)
I hate movies with unrealistic physics...bah!

Um I'm no wizard but ozone layer protects our planet from hazardous radiations, yes. The greenhouse gases keeps our planet warm enough to support life. I think he has mixed those two up..

-Meteorology major here @ Iowa State University [also has a great program].

This movie rocked. hands down. sure some time frames were a little off [especially being able to hike from D.C. to Manhatten [40 miles] in one day....yea...i don't think so. but if time frames that were closer to reality were used the movie would be a lot longer.

Special effects rocked. and the science was awesome and interesting as well.

but does it get to -147 at the top of the troposphere? [where the supposed supercooled air was coming from]. i think you would have to go higher than that [to almost the thermosphere]. oh well, it doesn't really matter it was still cool to see.

Normal mushy-love stuff was put in there, like all disaster movies [Twister, ID4, dante's peak, etc...]

i enjoyed it . good times. and when the water blasted through the windows @ the library i could feel it in my seat. awesome!

Going off of what you said here you would lead one to believe that the further up you go in the atmosphere the warmer it gets. That is not the case, which I'm sure most of us are aware of.

Again, I'm not saying that anything in this movie was 100% correct. The problem with meteorology is that they have only been able to study weather patterns within the stable environment of the earth. Sure there are meteorology programs within NASA and such that study weather patterns on other planets and throughout the solar system, but that is a relatively new study.

That being said I will repeat what I stated earlier, it is not known exactly how things happened during the last ice age because we don't have any written history on it. Anything that is stated about it is just a theory. Until something like this happens again, we can only take educated guesses at what may happen. That's the joy of science.

When I first saw the preview for this movie, I was really pumped to see it. Then I realized all I wanted to see was the CGI disaster parts which would last no more than 10 min and the rest of the movie would be utter shite filled with cheesy lines, bad acting and terrible heroes.. especially this one with DENNIS QUAID!! Come on!!! The bad thing about true disaster movies like this (not like Armageddon or Pearl Harbor, etc) is that I hate the idea of one man or one group coming up with a solution to beat Mother Nature and save the world and mankind. Bah... I'll just wait for it to come on the tele and watch the disaster parts.
