ok guys, here's what i did to my cans. First off, if you have only one pair of headphones, have a regular gig, and short on money, I wouldn't recommend doin this. Ive had my pioneer hdj1000s for over 3 years now and pretty much have experienced wires shorting out and even the swivel casing had a crack in it. But all of that is fixed and i figured that since Ive resurrected these cans from the dead so many times, I guess it couldnt hurt to do something new to it.
1. You gotta take everything apart. You need the right size screwdrivers for the little screws because if you dont, youll risk stripping the screw, and then ur fucked. What you can and cannot take off, is up to ur particular can.
2. Figure out how u want to paint ur phones. You have two options, you can either use spray paint, or acrylic paint. If you want to use spray paint, i highly recommend using Krylon. DO NOT sand down on ur headphones. I dont think its necessary and it makes ur headphones look messed up and used. Thats why I recommended Krylon. No need to prime or anything. Just spray and DO NOT over spray. If you want to go for acrylic, thatll take a lil bit more time. Go to a crafts store, get the paint u want, some primer, and paint the individual pieces using a brush. The main thing about painting is that you gotta paint quickly and throughly. If you realized you missed a spot, or didnt paint an area enough after it had started to dry, the acrylic will get clumpy and itll look like a mess.
3. After you've finished painting everything, let it sit for at least 6 hours/overnight. DO NOT touch it.
4. The acrylic paint i used was already glossy, so I didnt have to glaze it over with separate gloss. For the glow/black light illuminance effect, I mixed glow in the dark paint with the yellow paint I had.
Thats just about it really, its not hard to do. Really its more about attention to detail than anything. Just make sure you do it right the first time, go through with putting tape on all the parts u dont want paint to get on etc. Lastly, after youve done painting, leave your cans alone for at least 6 hours. If the paint seems like it wont stick, its cuz it hasnt finished drying yet, not because you got the wrong paint.
