No offence but the reason why Canada has no military IS because of the US.

the reason we have no military is becuase we choose not to. We have a socialistic economy that has a 26B/yr healthcare system. We can spend some of that on the military, but why should we since we have NORAD, and the U.S is more then willing to spend billions on military?

Would you rather have our not so shabby healthcare system, or HUGE military spending?

No offence but the reason why Canada has no military IS because of the US, and if we are at least "pretending" to be friends then we should at least "pretend" to act like ones...They had a horrible tragedy, in which Canadians lost their lives as well, and yet we keep ignoring that for some reason.

funny i was just thinking about who can hypothetically attack Canada... and the only one with even a remote possibility might be the US lol

The reason why we don't have a military and why nobody will attack Canada is because it's too close to the US and the US will never allow it...if you think there's another reason you must be in denial...should I remind you the Cuban missle crisis...how they freaked out when Soviet Union started putting military bases and missles so close to them...what do you think will happen if anyone decided to take over Canada...

EDIT

Canada is US's major trading partner and vice versa...Canada is highly dependent on the US and we share the longest border in the world...the reason why we have such a small military is because we have the largest military underneath us for protection...

lol I would like to know which country is vowing to invade Canada.. Thats just it, we have a weak little foreign policy that won't ever offend anyone. We couldnt even take a strong stance against Iran over the Kazemi death.

That's true...BUT...if we went back to the cold war days for a minute...Soviets could have used Canada as a spring board to attack the US just as they did with CUBA and the US FREAKED OUT...of course nothing ever happened but regardless...

Right now that IS correct nbody wants to attack canada nor it needs to...but i'm just saying that we are protected by uncle Sam down south regardless, and for their own interest not ours by the way...

Actually, Canada is ranked 5th I believe as a "Christian target" to some fanatic groups out there.

1. America
2. Britain
3. Spain
4. Australia
5. Canada.

yah know, I highly doubt Canada is even on the radar when it comes to a terrorists eyes. Why go after Canada when there are much greater targets? We're world renound as peace keepers and peace makers, I just wish our foreign policy was less bark and more bite.

the real solution to our military problem is to have a small highly trained, very equipped task force. 5-10,000 men that can be sent into SMALL yet highly volatile situations and BE EFFECTIVE. War as we use to know it such as WW2 is gone. From now on we will just see small isolated skirmishes that end in a matter of days/months. The latest Iraqi invasion is a testament to that.

I don't think you need to actually and physically "invade" Canada...just the fact that these islamic fundamentalists and terrorist guys (and girls) can easily enter the country, study here, plan, travel, get citizenships and etc is enough...I mean we let a family into our health care system that openly supports and cheers for terrorism, and we are saving their lives and helping them...?

EDIT

This ties in with the other thread (don't remember the name) where we said that all the spies have a Canadian passport because it's accepted everywhere same thing really...

I totally respect your point, however its difficult to weed out the good regular refuges who really are escaping a despotic regime and start a better life from those who are here to learn/travel/gain citizenship just so they can cause harm. I being one of those refugees who came to this country a long long time ago can attest to the level of success that immigrants can attain. The question is, where do we draw the line? Do we start having a hard line on all immigrants? We raise security yes, but security can only so much, there is no such as perfect security. So if we as a nation still survive as an immigrant attractive nation, we must be willing to accept a level of risk, and be TOLERANT of it.

That's true...so the question becomes where DO we draw the line??? How do we maintain the image of a free and acception nation however don't appear as a adoormat that you can easily walk over and whipe your feet on...We need to be a little more tough in some areas otherwise we'll continue to be used and abused.

EDIT

The problem is that our government isn't much better than US's...they lie, they are corrupt, they have their own agendas, and there's a lot of useless spending and paperwork pushing going on. I'm sure that everyone can agree with me on that. So the problem really is from within...

Definitely agree with that.. need to be much tougher, but one must mention that Immigration Canada as a whole is exceedingly tougher then it was in say the late 80's when they'd let just about anybody in, who wanted to come in.

you described every government. Government as a whole is not and can never be perfect. Think about it, take 300,000 people working for a company that services 30,000,000 people. And thats just for a small country like Canada. The task is ENORMOUS. It is so difficult to satisfy all peoples and interest groups that there is even a term for it now. Its called "satisficing". The only way to make all interest groups happy, is to have VERY SLOW INCREMENTAL CHANGE. Its like easily manuevering an oil tanker. Its slow and will take time to change directions.
