Oakey was never the best mixer, but he used to rock the crowds, and that is probably the same for Tiesto, a lot of people, you might call them mindless, but probably more purists is the better word will enjoy the 'enthusiasm' they show.
Others like a lot of people here see past that & expect technical brilliance all the time, It's not a lot to ask I know, but you could get too much on that side, and take a guy like Zabiela who technically I rate as one of the best, but trackwise he makes me want to cut off my balls with a rusty 50 pence coin.
Think for a minute, Forget DJ Lists, popularity bullshit, every dj is different in their own way, and there are thousands of DJs who've been in the business for years without any of the big publicity, who are twice as talented as the ones who get the main headlines. DJ Sy is a great DJ/Scratcher but since he's spun hardcore for years, no1 will appreciate that, DJ Hype & Andy C are great D&B DJs but again their styles won't be appreciated by everyone. Mark EG has the energy of Tiesto x about 20 times, and plays weird sets, and got me into a lot of the trancey sounds in the late 90s, but he's never had the full superstar treatment guys like Tiesto take for granted.
I believe it's time that people just got off the back of DJs, if you find armin boring or Schulz the master of mcprog, tiesto an assclown, or think ferry spins too much of his own stuff lately (mainly cos a lot of other stuff sucks ) Just spare a moment for the guys who yes, get paid shitloads, but have been doing it for years, and in many cases started out doing it cos they loved it, djing, producing, and spare a thought for them when we're in an age of people who download a software and expect to make a track and be signed within months. All this does is pollute the airwaves with sub-standard crap which if some DJs play it, will never give us artists who technically wipe their ass on about 30 of this 'new wave' of producers... like Oliver Lieb for a prime example, He did things ahead of it's time, he's produced many styles, and done it all exquisitely. Maybe it will happen in time, but I doubt for example Airbase or Thomas Datt or Envio or Endre will ever be able to accomplish in their careers what he has in his.
Respect where it's due, but I do believe there are too many 'fish in the pond' as far as productions go anyway atm, sure theres real talented guys, Espen Gulbrandsen (Recluse etc) is one who springs to mind, Phynn is amazingly talented, and Factoria is another who technically spends ages on tracks & writes good melodies, but they will be relatively unnoticed if so many people make tracks just to get signed rather than cos they have the talent that guys like ferry armin etc did at their age.
