I could of swore Oakenfold was one of the first slamming Derek howell tunes....He helped him breakthrough with his single 'Frozen'.

Ta has a bunch of AVB/PVD dickriding morons.
Get a clue idiots. Oakenfold has provided some of the most unique and rarest tune selections in the past

oakenfold was here for a massive in June I believe, he brought in his ancient rotary mixer, which none of the locals knew how to use - so they all train wrecked, and he told them he was going to play harder, so they all built him up, played hard - and he comes on and plays this really bad melodic/progressive stuff and i've never seen a dance floor scatter so fast. Everyone literally just stood there and listened to it (except the drugged up nammers of course)

Oakenfold has been my idol for years, and I go right up to the front of the stage (he refused to take a pic with me earlier that night, too) and he yawned, so I yelled up to him "HI OAKENFOLD!" and he looked back at me and smiled and I fingered him, the look on his face was priceless. After that, he played crap, paced back and forth, checked his watch, yawned, leaned against the props, I think he even tied his shoes once - terrible set, terrible performance, and he probably wont be booked in Vancouver for a long time because of it. He also tried to get the promoters girlfriend to go back to his hotel.

To top that off, he left his set 30 minutes early.

I lost all respect for him after that, unfortunatly. Though he did play newborn, which I love.

After that, Phynn came on and BLEW THE PLACE AWAY. He's coming back this Saturday, Phynn outdid Oakenfold in every way imaginable, he made my night and everyone elses too.

It's a shame Oakenfold went downhill after Bunkka, but what can you do? Can't live forevor.

OMG. You have to be kidding. You think PVD has depth and variety compared with Oakie. Oakie may not be the technical mixer Van Dyk is, but he's played everything from Jungle to prog to trance to breaks and even some hip-hop/reggae. I can understand knocking him for other reasons, but calling his music too narrow is just ignorant.

You can always tell if Oakey gives a shit. He will dance and do that 'one finger and elbow wiggle' thing when he's up for it.

Also, I think the crowd play a major part in whether Fold performs or not, whenever I have been there and the turn-out is bad or the crowd don't dance he goes home early. And rightly so.

In Ibiza 2001, Oakey was supposed to play a sunset at the Closing Party's Pre-Party at Kanya. I got there well early in the day and sat there all day waiting. I got seats literally beside the decks where a table had been erected to put his record box on (right behind my seat)After 5 hours wait, half an hour before he is due on, Oakey turns up with a mate, wanders around, has a drink, sees that the turnout isn't big and fucked off. I didn't see him play a set until Pacha that night. I was pissed off.

Jason - You are right, he was playing breaks in 96-97. Not only tracks like gus gus - purple (Sasha vs. the Light), but deeper more progressive breaks. I was just listening to a live set from 97 called, A Rare Treat. It's an essential mix where he plays everything from breaks, to jungle to Bob Marley and even has a track or two with vocals and melody w/out beat.

Oakenfold has a wide variety of tracks he plays, you just have to be looking. The fact that PVD's biggest fan would call Oakenfold narrow makes me laugh til my stomach hurts. I can understand liking PVD, but he's quite narrow, especially live nowadays.

Oakenfold is definitely hit and miss. Sometimes he is decent and sometimes he sucks. His track selection is usually pretty damn good, but I will agree he is very technically flawed. He does know how to cover that up though. I have to give him credit for that, because the average listener can't tell the difference. That includes his catastrophic mixes when he runs out of record and tries to kick a beat in. As someone else said, he has pretty good timing. I just wish he were more consitent.

In addition, I have heard him play some of the best progressive tracks/sets in the last couple of years to the point that I didn't believe it was him spinning. Narrow, ha.

2 words sum up the opinion of his 'narrow' selection - 'Urban Soundtracks.'

And as for PVD, you can't get more mono-style. He cannot try anything new because he only plays at 140BPM.

what if his strategy is to get people to like the new oakenfold, then go back to playing how he used to...then all the people who like the new oakenfold are exposed to the old oakie, and wham! more people listen to trance, more people into the scene, etc...

but man, some of those stories are terrible...leaving early, that bullshit
