Yep, narrow-minded. I listen to Paul van Dyk's tracks, and also techno, and enjoy them both. Open your mind.

that doesnt make sense . look past the sound he is known for ??? well isnt that what he is know for ??

so you are saying he is known for a sound then? how could he be known for a sound that isnt a reflection of his taste ?

I can not see why PVD would choose to demonstrate his influence by "german techno" vividly in his sets rather than in any of his production works. it doesnt make sense to me. its like he tricks you. You listen to his work and you think hes a trance DJ but than you go see him live and hes a hard german techno DJ

Here are examples of releases which made me think or expect to hear a trance DJ

Zurdo
Reflection
Out There and Back
Politic of Dance ( which was a mix cd rather than production)
etc.

I can list more but I think you get my point

By that I mean try to look past the sound that made him popular (Tell Me Why, For An Angel etc. etc.). By doing that you'll realize that there's a lot more to Paul's music than the melodic stuff that made him so big.

I tried to listen to it. Trust me I like hard trance. Look at my tracklist at some of my mix sets of you dont believe me. I just dont hear anything melodic or intersting in the german techno he plays.I cant get into it. But that isnt the point System J. You fail to answer my questions.

Please read my other posts cuz I dont want to repeat myself again.

My questions about PVD

Answer these questions:

-------

I like the trance PVD makes. This is how I discovered PVD. I am suprised that as a fan of PVD fans you have such a hate for trance since IMO alot of PVD's work is trance. Nothing But You = Trance ..Thats Life = Trance ...etc I never heard him produce on his cds or vinyls anything close to what I hear in some of his sets. This is what is truely suprising since I would expect a DJ to spin something near to what he likes or produces. Its almost deceiving!! IMO its like a total reversal of what I hear from him in his production. Im not sure if other PVD fans feel the same way.

Im not sure if were are the same PVD fan. I can not see how someone can love his production work yet than hate trance and also find his hard techno stuff musical or even intersting. Perfect example would be when he played junk project in his casion set!!

Or another example would be....I realy enjoyed his opening set broadcasted on fritz. It was trancy. Remeber the small set w/ summer dreams. I can not understand how one could enjoy that but than enjoy the tunes he closed his set on fritz with.

Explain to me this PVD fans

From the interviews I saw with PVD this was my understanding of him ( please correct me if im wrong):

He grew up in Germany as a young man heavely influenced by Detroit Techno. Not becuase he liked it but becuase this is what the East German regime allowed them to listen too. He said he knew other music existed but because of communist rule they werent exposed to anything else. He called this "bullshit" everyone was listening too. He than said he got inspired and interested in music when he heard the smiths and new order. Bands I love . Bands you would call more trancy rather than techno if anything !! I than thought PVd hated that hard banging techno becuase 1) he liked new order and the smiths 2) called the detriot techno bullshit 3) heard his productions and they classified them as trance rahter than german techno.

I thought PVD was popular in Germany as a DJ becuase unlike other German DJs pushing the harsh techno sound he was pushing something more melodic. Again I never heard his sets just assumed from his interviews, cds I owned etc.

Where did I go wrong cuz obviously this isnt the PVD I hear now.

you mentioned trying to understand PVD.

It seems so difficult to understand the music he is trying to push forward when one day I hear his sets and its hard techno than the next day on fritz hes playing prog./trance/ house/ etc. Than another day he produces a trance album.

Its like hes all over the place. As a PVD fan of his production work is just confusses me to hear him play tunes that are total opposites.

IMO this is frustrating becuase I really want to be a PVD whore but cant really understand what hes tryng to do or what to expect from him.

But I stress his constancy in his production work. It is there that I thought I heard a sound he was trying to push forward. But as I said before I dont hear it in his sets.
PVD was the very first DJ I was introduced too. I did not look through him in terms of tiesto or armin. As I said I bought his cds and became interested in him. I than soughtout more info about him and read his bio. After reading his bio ( which I described to you) and listening to his production work I assumed that PVD was this DJ that produced and spun beautiful music (i.e. Out There and Back). However, I soon discovered that my intial impressions where wrong when I began to listen to his live sets and see him perform live. Again I stress that I was not trying to compare him to any other dj but rather trying to understand him.

Would you agree with me when I say this comment:

All sucessful DJ produce and push a sound forward. For example, Schulz has a distict sound he pushes, as does Sasha, as does Armin, as does Tiesto, etc. You hear a tune or a set and you say immedietely that is so dj [fill in the blank] sounding. Thus this is what makes them special and others who copy it obvious to others.

In that sense what is the sound that is "PVD". I thought is was the trancy songs like Thats life , TIme of Our Lives, Nothing But You, Togther we will concquer. But he doesnt push this sound in his sets. Unlike say markus, sasha, armin, tiesto, ect. There is no constitency. Please explain this to me

So basically you're asking why his DJ sets are so different from his albums?

Not really from what I can gather. You ask why the sound you've come to expect from his albums isn't what you're getting when you see him as a DJ. Well, the only reason I can think of is that Paul likes all types of electronic music, not just trance. While this doesn't shine through as much on his albums, you can still gather as much from a lot of his earlier material, like I posted earlier.

As for this "distinct sound" you're on about, I think it's easy to hear that it's Paul playing compared to other DJs, for instance due to his reworks and the fact that he almost always plays much faster than the norm. The fact that he plays so many different musical styles in his sets does not detract from that.
