TIC Weekend
2004-11-04
Hi everybody,
Wow!
What a weekend I just had.. It all started on thursdaynight when I was announced, for the third time in a row, as the most popular dj in the world.I was actually supposed to go to that party but I got caught up in rehearsals for the show which took more time then I expected.
I felt bad that I couldn’t go because even the third time it’s such a big honour to win this award.
It’s such a great feeling to know that so many people around the world support me.
It would have been great if I could have celebrated that night in London but instead I decided to do it in Arnhem 2 nights in a row!
On Friday 29th of October it was finally time to perform.
I just had a month off without travelling and dj-ing so I felt refuelled and ready to play again.
I was pretty nervous fridaynight because it was a long time since the first Tiësto In Concert on May 10th 2003, and that first show was a hard one to top.
During my 3-D show in the first hour I was still nervous but after a few mixes I settled down.
I heard the crowd cheering and I felt much more comfortable.
The grand opening was great and I went right into my set. The whole night was great and everybody had a good time. There was only one thing that didn’t work very wel, there were too many pauses between the various acts and parts of the show. This was the main reason why I said on Saturday during my little speech at the end, that Friday was a kind of a general rehearsal. The Friday night was awesome and at the end it was still very busy. I thanked the crowd for coming and I received the DJ-mag award of the art director of the U.K.-based magazine.
Straight after the show I had a meeting with everybody of production and talked for over 2 hours how we could improve the show so everything could go even smoother and faster the next night.
After that meeting I went home satisfied, thinking back of the great first performance I just did.
Doing a gig like this is different then a normal dj-set. When I normally do a dj-set I am fully in control of everything, but on a Tiësto In Concert event I am not. There are over 200 people
working on each show to make sure everything falls into place. As you can’t rehearse the whole show, you have to hope that everything goes exactly as planned.
On Saturday I woke up after a three hours of sleep and couldn’t sleep anymore. I was so excited and memories of last nights show went through my mind. When I arrived at 8 in the evening at Gelredome I noticed that I was not the only one who was excited about the coming night. Everybody I talked to said the same thing to me; “last night was great, but tonight is going to be even better!”.
I started playing at 23.15 with my 3-D show. I couldn’t see the crowd, I only heard them and I got very excited. After that at midnight the Grand Opening, amazing!
As soon as I mixed “Olympic Flame” into “Forever Today” I felt it. This night was gonna be MAGIK! The crowd’s reaction was overwhelming and the first hour passed by as it was only 5 minutes. I did my little trick at 1 AM, which was a great opportunity to get rid of some healthy tension.
I kicked in with Breda 8 pm and off we went. The journey went on in the next two hours with highlights including a great violin player/dj, DJ Mason, and my favourite singer of all times Matt Hales. My favourite track of his album is “Easier To Lie”. So I asked him to do this one as well before performing the track UR we made together. To me he is the best live singer I have ever heard.
Then at 4 AM I moved on with another highlight of the show, the girls from the Bulgarian choir “The Children Of Orpheus Choir”. My man Geert Huinink came with this idea to me 3 months ago. He played me a demo of them and I was immediately blown away.
These are all highly trained top-class singers which will all be individual stars in the future in musicals or other theatre pieces. I met the girls before I went on. They brought me two presents;
a handmade Bulgarian violin, and a perfect copy of the painting called “Sunflower” by Vincent van Gogh. One of the girls is also a very good painter and that’s what she does in her free time.
After that they sang a special song for me in the skybox of the Gelredome.
The choir song beautifully live a special intro called “Open Your Heart For The Music” and had special vocals on top of my track “Suburban Train”. I kicked in some big tunes and felt really emotional when I played my mix of “Adagio for strings”. When I played that mix, all memories of the last years went through my mind and I thought about how blessed I am to have the opportunity to live this life I have.
Minutes later Mason was back to join me on a freestyle mix of the 2004 edit of “Lethal Industry”, followed by two amazing drummers from Holland, André Hoekstra and Marnix Stassen.
I made a cover version of John Aquaviva’s “Spastik” to give them a basic rhythm to drum to.
I really enjoyed working with these guys because they are just as dedicated to drumming as I am to DJ-ing! At 5 AM we went on the last part of the show, entitled “Magikal Circus”.
I wrote the intro track together with Geert and it fitted perfectly for that part of the night.
The track was accompanied with a beautiful Cirque du Soleil stylish act to set the pace for the
next hour.
At 6 AM I felt so happy, and I noticed the atmosphere had changed. The dome was packed but it was very quite. I could only hear the sound clicking through the stadium and everybody was dancing, smiling and listening. No one talked, screamed or clapped but I felt everybody was having their moment of happiness just listening to the music…
I pushed through till 7 AM and then the special after party began. For the extra hour everybody who is a forum member of my website (my dedicated and deeply devoted fans) could put in a request for what I should play in that last hour. I played the tracks people voted for the most.
It was great again to hear the old tunes like Yahel and Push and and BT’s “Mercury and Solace”... The crowd went nuts and I wanted that this night would never end. I could only finish this night off with one track of course, “Silence” by Delirium. This is a track I always will and want to be remembered by.
I threw my headphones in the crowd and went for a walk to the audience handing out signed records. Words cannot describe what I felt on this night. I said it through the mike as well, this was the best night of my live. It was complete, had everything in it where I as a dj and musician stand for. And I am very proud that I can say that, after winning all those awards and
great things that had happened to me in the last 8 years, my best DJ gig ever was that night,
Saturday the 30th of October 2004
Thanks to everybody who has supported me all over the years, it was a legendary night,
and it would make me proud, if I will be remembered for this for years to come.
And a special thanks to the forum members who presented me the Tiësto.com messageboard with many nice and personal notes from a lot of fans. It’s going to get a special place in my livingroom!
Love,
Tiësto
