i find that people who dont normally like trance still go for the iconic, late 90s stuff. for one, its recognisable (at least over here in britain). matt darey - liberation. atb - 9 pm (till i come). lucid - i cant help myself, push - universal nation (push remix). scooter has a bad rep over here cuz of the happy hardcore. doesnt seem to go down well. the more obscure and specialized you get, the harder i think it will be for a crowd that doesnt normally like this music, to find something they can relate to in it. even though im not partial to hip hop, if i can recognise a track i tend to get more into it, if only cuz i know how it builds and when it kicks off and kicks back in. just means people can dance to it with some confidence and a dancefloor full of people kicking off can often save a night even if the music isnt much liked. better atmosphere too.

point is, ive been to quite a few nights where i didnt really like the music but it was fun anyway because everyone had the express intention of making it good. i can go to events where i love the music but if the floor is empty, im not gonna be confident about getting up and dancing and the event will degenerate into an uncomfortable borefest.

IMO, just play one trance track for them, like the one I recommended, sandstorm by darude, and then get back to playing rap. If you start playing trance a lot through the dance, you will have a bad reputation after it. When people consider you for djing at their party some guy will tell them that you only spin trance, then you wouldn't dj parties and dances because of your reputation. Just play one trance track and go straight back to playing rap again. You will at least introduce trance music to those who don't know about it.

Excuse me, but Im one of those ADD kids, all my friends are those kids (who listen to 50, JayZ, Eminem and whatnot) and I can tell you firsthand; The kids love THE SANDSTORM!!! its a party ina can!! noone can resist that song, NO ONE!!! the average hip hop lover that turns to some kind of EDM (even though hip hop is a type of breakbeat, so its EDM too) turns to house.. play house, they'd prolly like that more than trance

deffantly go with Breaks... iv done this before myself and they stoped bitching about the Trance once i started throwin on some heavy Breaks they work...

but if you were in NC man id let you use my Breaks collection have plenty of remixes of 80's songs as well as Usher and Jay-Z and even Lil' John... so thats something i use to get the crowed used to this new style...

the way to go is remixes man...

Try freestyle music. It kinda sounds like rap, but at the same time you can dance to it.

At my Homecoming this year, the DJ played mostly rap shit, but threw in 2 trance tracks which all the kids surprisingly liked...which were:
Darude - Sandstorm
Alice Deejay - Better Off Alone

Play those 2, the kids will recognize them and they're just good to dance to. Also, if you wanna go for something else that they'll recognize but without cheesy euro vocals, go for:
Fragma - Toca Me

Toca's Miracle would annoy some people, but if you play Toca Me, they'll recognize the melody and enjoy it. It's a pretty chill track too.

And if you can, play some trance with deep lyrics. A lot of the punk/emo kids would like it much more if the lyrics related to what they usually listen to. Tracks like:
Jan Johnston - Flesh
Sunscreem vs Push - Please Save Me
Matt Darrey & Marcella Woods - Liberation

There are quite a few people at this school who listen to EDM apparently. The majority still have an affinity for hip-hop. Here's the "census" [not sure that's the right word] of the population:

Jocks & preppy people- about 25% that listen to classic rock and stuff like that [don't worry about them, even if the other DJ played hip-hop they'd hate it although if anyone has any last minute suggestions as to how to deal with them then please post them before 5 pm Eastern Standard Time on Saturday the 11th]
Most others- probably a bit less than 60% that listen to hip-hop
Goths Metalheads- probably less than 5%
EDM compatible people- approximately 10%

Keep in mind this school is pretty big. Thanks for the advice everyone.

For those prepy kids you could always drop something like Warp brothers - smells like teen spirit, and you could wear one of those yellow jackets with a big red R or S or whatever letter one always see in movies that they wear.

Why would anyone (If you don't have these in your collection from like years ago) go and buy something like Darude sandstorm, fragma - toca me , alice dj and atb 9pm. That to me is the same as wasting money on hip hop records.

I was in the same situation as you were at the first university party I DJed. So many dickheads came up to me; “do you have any DMX? Can u play some 50cent? If you want to have any chance of passing off EDM at a uni party, I would go with mostly house as they can still grind to it so it won’t be out of their comfort zone. OR alternatively grind up some pills and mix them into the keg...
