stealing? as far as I know she FOUND it... she didn't TAKE it directly from someone else. maybe if the bank asked for "whoever found the $40K to give it back" in the news or something, then I'd think of returning it, but as long as nobody claimed it, i'd keep it!

Alright I get ya now

Only.....be aware that welfare recipiants really don't get that much $$ as the media has hyped us to believe. The straight fact is that they make less than a minimum wager and is based on the financial demographic figures.

Glad to hear your not heartless......my mistakes

Not sure if i'd call it stupidity, it is honesty to give back something that isn't yours no matter how you got it. Even if you just found it. She didn't earn it. Finding a twenty on the street and you bending down to pick it up doesn't mean you earned that twenty.

Looks like she's caught between a rock and a hard place

Gotta admire this mom for being honest and showing her kids self control and integrity.

As for those selfish bums that would take the $$ and run...........yak, yak, yak......get a job!

I think you're missing the point.
Someone knew that money was missing.
It might have not have been the same day the woman found it but evenutally the bean counters would catch up with their books and someone is going to come looking for it.

According to your logic if I leave my car downtown after a night of wooping it up and you come across it parked on the street the next day, you did not find it.
Ownership of an object isn't transfered unless there is absolute proof that noone wants it (or it was sold to you).
Yes there was bag of money sitting all by itself but who in their right mind forgets a bag of money??? Honestly...

She probably should have sat on it for a few weeks before returning it. If nothing came up, then it's her's to do with anyway she wants(nobody claimed it) and that would be as acceptable as returning it the way she did.

It's nice to think about what each of us would have done with that amount of money but the situation is always different had we actually been in the poor woman's shoes at that moment.

I still think her good samaritan deed was the best decision.
A great role model move for her kids.
Personally I think in the end, she's getting more out of it now than she would have keeping the money...

Very likely... but to this day (as far as I've heard) they haven't found out whose money it is. Meaning, the owner hasn't stepped up to the plate. Automatically assuming it's bank's money and taking it there? Genius...

Your analogy is a bit skewed... you could most likely find me (or cops could) if I took your car and drove it around the city. However, if I took your bag full of money, about $40Gs full let's say, there's no way in hell you could ever tell me I was spending your money. Even if I spent it under your nose! What, tell me you remember all those serial #s, come on.

That's what I'm thinking... without the "returning" part, of course.

Yea, great role model for the kids. What message is she giving them there? "Kids, if you run into some sort of valuable stuff, even if there's a very likelyhood that the person who left it behind will not claim it, you go right ahead and return it to whomever you think you should return it. Don't keep it, even if it could make a whole lot of difference in your life or help you out in hard times." Bravo!

And yea, she's getting a lot more now than she would've if she kept the money... about MINUS $39,000 cash. non-taxable.

No offense or anything, but from my experience, I noticed people in Canada tend to be very selfish.

When I lived in Russia, one time I found a wallet with bunch of ID cards and 30,000 rubles, and I returned it to the old lady (I tracked the address, it wasn't too far away) without taking a kopeika (penny). She gave me lots of candy as a reward ... That was so sweet ...

About two year ago, this time here in Canada, in Hamilton, I found a wallet in Lime Ridge mall on a seat (in an area where people sit down), and looked though it to find, among credit cards and licenses, 40 bucks (two 20 dollar bills). I took the money and gave the wallet to the 'LOST AND FOUND' section. I hope the person got their wallet back with lots of money's worth of cards ... there was a paltinum credit carm amongst, but I was KIND enough not to write any info down or spend it ...

That came a month after my mom's purse was stolen from her locked car (yet the car wasn't taken itself), and not only the thief take the 800 or so bucks in it, he dumped the other contents of it in a dumpster. My mom was dumb enough to carry 200 bucks worth of cards (fees to re-sign them), as well as social insurance cards and such. WHY COULDN'T THE F****ING ASSHOLE TAKE THE MONEY AND LEAVE THE PURSE ALONE????? MY MOM WAS GONNA PAY OFF HER CREDIT CARD, and instead she had to borrow money from me!!!!

When I once had MY OWN car, a previously used 1992 pontiac bonneville that I got for a good deal, back in 2000, everybody just became my friends, and at first I didnt realize it was just for my car. But later on, when the same people that I gave "favours" to by giving the ma lift home got pissed off at me for not doing them another favour, I got a different picture ... and the list is bigger ... so you see ... capitalism is a one selfish society, no offense to any of you who are not selfish.

If most other people are selfish, why should I keep being nice to them if it doesnt help me at all? Why should I not be selfish and let a**holes use me like the easiest mop on the face of the world? Wouldn't a smart choice would be to do whats best for yourself?

...but you took the money? reason being? not as easy to track down as credit cards would be, eh?

The reason no one has fessed up yet is probably because of some internal investigation and not wishing some public embarrassment.

Coincedence?

It's called being honest and having morals; it's quite obvious it's not hers. She knew it and her kids knew it.
And speaking of logic, how can she be MINUS $39,000 when it wasn't her's to begin with?
She didn't find a ten dollar bill here folks, we're talking about 40K!

Yes, the immediate response for a lot of people would be that she should have kept it.
She's poor, she found money, sounds like a nice Cinderella story doesn't it?
Fact of the matter is, we still don't know who's money it is and money just don't 'appear' in front of a woman on welfare with 6 kids.
Even if she did keep the money in a matter of months that money would be gone and they'd be back where they were before the money came along.
That amount of time is infinitesimally smaller than the life lesson she just gave her kids which will last a lifetime.
Maybe on some strange level, she just passed a test?
Who knows...

assuming there is one... she should've kept it until that internal investigation actually found her, or they went public about it.

sure, who in the world checks serial numbers on the bills (except for banks and cops)?

once she picked up the bag, it was hers. and where is the difference between $10 and $40,000? amount wise, maybe, but would you keep the $10 bill you found on the street or go out of your way to return it to the bank when you had no idea whose it is anyway? Same shit with $40,000. A few thousand more or less...

quote:

That's a big assumption, but the way she handled this situation I'm pretty sure she'd be back where she was in a matter of weeks... can't keep $40,000 for more than a day? you can't really expect her to save much money any other way either then...
