KH is not Guv...and it's a great venue...iDream a couple of years ago was a lot of fun. Guv was a dark, hot mess with Rauhofer spinning crap...while Lawler and Armin had smiles on everyone's faces in KH.

if a "big name" circuit DJ comes, and the music sucks...won't people write off Prism as crap with two bad parties? What if it does just "ok"? So next year the dilemna is the same...stick with the same tired formula or take a chance and try something new.

fuck pandering to the circuit guys...that scene is dying a slow, painful death in this city. Fly and the Barn may still pack it in on weekends with their devoted following, but name one independent party or new club that's "taken off" in the last couple of years, catering exclusively to the circuit crowd? Or am I just that out of touch with the "mainstream" gay scene (entirely possible).

Deko-ze has exploded this year in the community...Vazoleen is still full...Buddies has a new generation of young guys there...Lub has some very decent house, depending on the night. I *honestly* think Toronto is ready for a non-circuit headliner!

if someone like Lawler was here, KH would be full...would it be packed with the same people? maybe not, but so what?

so why beat a dead horse...if Toronto is so world class, then let's take a step forward and contribute to changing the scene instead of stagnating.

Mark Thank you! I could not agree more, the circuit party scene is well past its prime, and it's time to look for a new formula to excite the younger generation. If its one of the same old circuit party music DJ's I wont be going either, as I have not for that exact reason for the past few years. So what does that say, obviously there are people that are not going out for the status quo, and I am sure there will be guys that won't go out if you switch it. So how about a multi room, or multi venue format offering a choice? The feed back from that should give a clear direction to move in for future years, and events.

For that matter its 5 parties, do they all have to follow the same format style and genre?

It would not be my first choice, but with a multi room format, you hedge your bets, get a known name in the gay community that will bring the circuit party crowd out, and keep them happy, at the same time offer up a good alternative with some Trance, maybe Techo, Bringing out those that won't otherwise come out.

PRISM will be 6 (possibly 7) parties over the weekend. For all the circuit guys who are afraid to step out of the circuit box, there will be Boot Camp on Friday night with DJ Abel and Revival on Sunday with Peter Rauhoffer. The Saturday party gives us a chance to stretch our wings a bit.

The circuit scene has evolved over the past 10 years and it will continue to do so (it will either evolve or die). The goal for PRISM is innovation instead of stagnation. That's why we invite local DJs to participate and why we try to find less typical DJs to spin the Saturday party. Having said that, it is a given that Ferry, Armin and Tiesto will not be headlining this year. There is a chance that a trance DJ will co-headline in the future using a multi-room format but this year the music will most likely be house.

First off, Unity is dead. Mourn it and move on.

Secondly, the Guv/Kool Haus is a great club. I have never seen a metal detector there nor have I had to wait any more than a minute to be served. Some gay guys get mad and have a bad experience no matter what. Toronto is cheaper than New York and has friendlier and hotter guys, so, people will always come to Toronto Pride.

Thirdly, these are PRISM events, not Toronto Pride events. There is no connection whatsoever between PRISM and Pride Toronto except that they happen on the same week. Pride Ball Toronto, the non-profit that organized last year's Pride Ball will not be involved this year.

The circuit community world-wide is not exactly thriving. Without appealing to a more diverse audience (including younger people, people with different body types and different musical tastes), it will die. As a way of life, the circuit scene is unsustainable.

Logically it should be held at the CNE? How is that logical? Sure the CNE has a lot of space but from a cost stand-point it is a horrible venue. We have to sell an additional 1,500 tickets just to make up the difference in costs between the CNE and Kool Haus or The Docks. In the old days the CNE would negotiate on the cost but those days are gone.

There are only two licensed and insured venues downtown that are big enough to handle PRISM and they are the Guv/Kool Haus and The Docks. Until someone builds another comparably-sized venue downtown, the parties will be at one of those two venues.

i agree mark but this isn't just a normal toronto weekend event...it's pride event and people coming into toronto from around the world don't know deko-ze, or care about what's going on at lub or buddies...they want to see a recognizable name that they see at the montreal and miami parties...like it or not that's still the general attitude....is it changing? yes, slowly.....but the entire just of my original post was that after last years problems to you gamble on this years party with a totally new approach and hope it works.....

like it or not the biggest circuit parties are packed when the usual suspects are dj'ing....

all that being said i'd like to see tom stephan spin....he does allot of gay parties and doesn't just stick to diva house

Tom Stephan is the best tribal choice out there for sure... i would go to that event ..

as for the circuit scene dying....slowly but surely..this is true...There will always be a circuit scene just because of its history and what it means to gay culture but a prime example is deko-ze spinning @ Fly....The one time i went to this...it was remarkable!!! He refused to spin only circuit house rather went ahead with his forward thinking tribalish tech house that he spins so well. I believe even Tom Stephan has spun @ Fly a few times now and im sure those nights are far from just "Diva" house.

Maybe the promoters can "toy" with the idea of trance by having a few local trance djs spin in a side room like last year with sarah mixington and company did @ the docks...if its fairly succesful...then go for it next year..book a headliner trance dj.

Actually, we will have the local DJ showcase again this year. It's one of the most important parts of the event to me. My ultimate goal is to have a giant two room party. One room with the expected circuit house and the other with a major trance DJ (a la Bal en Blanc). It won't happen this year though. Maybe next year if this year's event is really successful.

craig, I hear ya...going back to the "tried and true" formula might be the safer choice...but I really do hope they take a chance and change it up a bit. I won't fault the powers-that-be (much) if they opt for the former...based upon the reasons you mention.

In my possibly delusional world, I like to think that even if a Deko-ze headlined, that enough people would still go...which could result in the word being spread about what a great party it turned out to be...but...I can see the person bankrolling this disagreeing with my logic

I think part of the problem is that events are PROMOTED that well. Flyers and print ads are good and all...but how about a dedicated webpage just for that party...with DJ bios, sound clips, video clips of past events they did, tracklists, production work, links to mag reviews, discography, etc. I'd love to see some REAL promotion. If people saw video clips of Deko-ze tearing it up in KH or at Church/Wellesley last year...I think that would sway a few people! Again, me throwing things out there...it's not MY money that's at risk

it would be great to have some stats to draw upon, when making these decisions, like how many people:

- go regardless of who's spinning, simply because it's the big party of Pride week.
- do (and do not) go based upon predominently circuit music being played.
- decide to go specifically based upon who is headlining, where it's being held, etc. (ie. the picky ones)
- show up the night of (walk up sales).

my dream of a big gay (or gay positive) trance and prog event is probably a couple of years away, I'm sure...Mark Oliver + 4 hours of Armin + 3 hours of Sander Kleinenberg + lots of boys = perfect
