i actually have good phones hooked up to my ipod and it sounds amazing.

I have compared the sound with my Sony mdr-e888 earbuds. The EQ on the iPod distorts the sound. Playing with the EQ off, it's like a lot of audio players, which is flat.
I'm currently using an MZ-N10 which uses a Dolby audio processor and it sounds much better than the iPod.
