Re: Why is it people associate all electronic music with techno and not trance?

When ever anyone hears trance they call it techno, since when has techno been the stereotypical electronic music? |
For me, "techno" has alwaysbeen a really convenient, shorthand term for labelling the type of music that I listen to. It's less snooty than the labels, 'electronic music' and 'electronica', and if you say you listen to 'trance' people think you're a crackhead because the name sounds too subversive, like something having to do with drugs.
I used to call it 'electro' but people have coopted that word and now it is used to specify a nostalgic, low-tech, funky sound.
When I say 'techno', top-40 listeners always know what I mean ('trance-like' music). I just use it to refer to synthesized, rather than organic, music, with a 4/4 beat.

Since 1988 when Derrick may said (when asked about the difference between house & techno):
"It's a difference of respect. House still has its heart in 70's disco. We don't have any of that respect for the past, it's strictly future music. We have much greater aptitude for experiment."
Also, when reading old (12-15 year old) interviews with Cosmic Baby, Paul Van Dyk, Dr. Motte, Sven Väth and the likes you kind of get that feeling that trance was originally a subgenre for Techno. Basicly everything that was electronic dance music, without being House, was Techno.
Since then it has changed alot. Most of the stuff they call Prgressive House today would probably have been labelled Techno 15 years ago. I also think that only a few people today would call what Derrick May, Juan Atkins and, especially, Carl Craig were doing back then Techno if it came out now, it would probably be called IDM or something like that because of how melodic it is. House that came out in 1987-89 is closer to modern Techno & Trance than modern House.
Things changed. The people involved followed, the mass didn't. It's as simple as that.
Edit: I forgot to add that 13-14 years ago Dr. Motte was seen by many as the godfather of Trance. How many people today know that name & link it to Trance?
