That's what I thought... As long as I like it, what's the deal? I thought it would be only my problem if my music would be considered 'stale' by the audience.

Btw, Dumonde still sounds like the Dumonde from years ago if you ask me?

It sounds the same because it's practically my sound that I'm always using. I'd find it strange if I were to make a totally different remix and then still call it 'Icone'. Then again, it might still be the very first track Mike is ever going to have heard from me...

who cares?! Try new stuff... evolve your style (Stop producing in templates)... seriously, I don't wanna hear the same Icone I've been hearing since 2001. This is probably why I'm not a fan of your stuff anymore and have lost touch with you, but nice remix nonetheless. Keep your audience on the edges of their seats. You are far too predictable as a producer, in my opinion.

Yes, it's monumental for an artist to have a signature sound, but when everybody gets tired of it, I think it's time to get a new one (or make adjustments to the sound you already have)... Darude would have never made a come-back if he hadn't changed his tired old Sandstorm sound.. same with ATB.

A signature, canned sound only lasts about 1 or 2 years, after that people get tired of hearing new songs from you that sound just like your first hit.

Probably to someone who has never heard you before, that double-bassline you always use has drive somewhat, but to me who has been hearing you for awhile, it has no drive what-so-ever and detracts from the potential energy the track could have with a different bassline. Even though the simpler 4/4 offbeat bassline has been used and abused 10 fold, it is still far more interesting than this double-bassline (that's probably why it sold so many records).

Well, I don't know if everybody is tired of my sound. I'm not going to change for a couple of people who come back with this everytime. Not everybody is following me since the 'early years'. So it's good to act a bit more assertive in this case I think.

In fact, I'm only making my first steps into the scene with a couple of releases, isn't it a bit early to be talking about a 'come-back'? Funny...

To give a few counter-examples, I really loved Ferry Corsten's and Fire & Ice's old style of remixing. Now they've changed their sound and I'm not a fan anymore. Isn't it all a bit relative? I think it's too awkward a situation to already start generalizing...

The double bassline is gone since the update, just a last pointer

Look, you are an up-and-coming producer. Just because you've been producing since the early days doesn't mean you're up there with Ferry Corsten and Fire and Ice. They're commercial, you're underground. They've had worldwide hits, you haven't. You still have more time to experiment. If you have a club hit song with one style, that's nice and dandy. Try other styles... Also be derivative of other people's styles so you can learn from them. There are no rules when you are an up-and-coming producer, other than don't limit your potential.

However, if you crack the top40 billboard charts with a hit song, then you know you're made, and you may wanna keep that exact sound for a couple of years to generate some more hits and get as much money as you can out of that hit sound. Once that sound seems to not generate any more hits, you now have enough knowledge from experimenting while you were underground, to come up with another sound that's you.

If you made the mistake of keeping the same sound while you were underground, if you become a big hit, you'll probably have 15 minutes of fame because you won't have knowledge of any other style to quickly fall on.

I know it sounds harsh, and I know I'm not a hot-shot commercial artist either to be telling you this, but every commercial producer I've asked for advice on producing has told me the exact same thing I'm telling you, and I couldn't agree with them more.

I'm not telling you to drop your sound now... just experiment a little... I dono have another pseudonym or something where you try other things...

Yeah, I agree with you on the Ferry Corsten and Fire and Ice changing their style, but frankly, I would have dropped them either way. I was getting tired of their old style, but their new style is so not me, but hey if it sells more that's all that matters to them. I don't blame them. They're just doing what I explained earlier.

I agree with you too, that's not my principal aim either (because I fail to send out demos, hell I give away most of my tracks for free online, which scares many labels away from me), but when you see that million dollar contract, you'll eat all these words up and sign it, and fall into the same pit every commercial trance artist is in.

Put yourself in those artists places before you call them sell-outs.

Sidenote: wow!! sounds much better Icone (and more professional) with the bassline changed. Makes me wanna get up and dance... this is your best work so far IMO! Keep it up m8

i don't call artists sell-outs. but everything you said is right

i think it's not necessary to talk about this. it's really not like someone here had asked "man im desperate, i've only had 15 minutes of fame and then people forgot me, what am i doing wrong with my tracks ??"

Yeah it's kind of off topic, but you know me.. I go off topic all the time. Give me a topic and you'll end up somewhere and be like "how did we start talking about that?"

Hehe

Well, I honestly didn't think that far... I'm pretty satisfied with my music and I enjoy it alot. Not that I want to really impress someone, just be happy to see that people like it any way or another.

I am conscious about the fact that I will NOT make a big chart hit in the current trance scene, which is incredibly overflooded with trance artists. Heck, it's even hard to be original. I'll be happy (and proud) with what I get, either it's with this sound or another.

On another note, I still have my education and will probably have less and less time for music when my 'regular' job comes in. I have no BIG plans for the future in the trance scene, only to 'have some fun'.

I hope this makes some sense... It's not that I don't agree with you're saying Gerry, I understand it completely. I just think it doesn't apply to me and the situation I'm in. If I find the time and interest, I will experiment. Until then, this is just 'me'
