You missed the point completely. The word "sample" does not implicitly refer to a portion of someone else's work, and you can find millions of samples out there that won't get you sued if you use them in a production. If you think the only "free samples" you can get are of your own flatulence then maybe you ought to pipe down because you don't have a clue what you're talking about.

Yes, it's illegal to splice parts of other people's productions into your own without their permission, and vocals are obviously a huge part of that, but you seem to be horribly misconstruing the actual number of producers that do this. It's really very rare - 9 out of 10 people who rip samples are amateurs who don't know what they're doing in the first place and certainly aren't likely to go pro or make any money.

Heh... I've made a few illegal remixes back in the day... hell, I've done illegal remixes of songs I don't even own. But it's ok as long as I don't play them publicly, sell them, or upload them.

As for my original productions, I DL free sample packs off the net and record things. I find it kinda wierd to steal samples that are just percussion or other instruments... why the hell can't you just reproduce them yourself or use something different? I could probably make some pretty sweet percussive loops using a $15 mic and hitting random objects in my basement. One of my favourite bassdrums that I use is me flicking a balloon with my fingernail (with extensive modification, pitching, filtering, etc to make it sound good).

Now I've got a GF that can sing, so I don't have to steal vocals anymore... all I need is somebody who can write decent lyrics.

And with respect to MP3s... I have my music divided up into music I can use (ie music I own or the producers themselves have given to me) and pirated stuff (which I don't distribute, play in public, or upload sets containing.)

Haha, that's jokes, with all the extra work you're talking about it would probably be easier to just create one from scratch using a couple of oscs and volume envelopes - or just download one of the 10 million kicks online.

No way... it's quick and easy. Just noise reduction, pitch, FFT Filter, envelope. It's got an interesting attack.

Listen to some of say... Scumfrog's stuff. Some of the samples he uses in his tracks sound like wacking corrugated aluminum with a stick, shooting garbage cans, or hitting random objects.
