here's the article. Adults can choose to smoke, but they shouldn't force it on others, especially their own children..

smart people are able to make the intelligent decision of not smoking around children. My sister has a daughter and a newborn and always goes outside of the house to smoke, and never smokes in the car.

Other less intelligent beings probably don't realise how harmful smoking can be on the young developing bodies and need someone to tell them that they can't.

i can see your point about an opressive government however, it is the government (or taxpayers) who have to wear the costs of fcuked up kids as a result of parents who do things like drink and smoke during pregnancy, so there is a 'for' opressive government regarding stupid parents argument too.

they should ban bad foods coz theyre bad for you. shouldnt let parents eat bad foods in front of their young coz it sets a bad example. we should make exercise mandatory. we should ban cars for sure! how many kids get killed in cars driven by less than able morons?

there has to be a line drawn somewhere. and im drawing it my car. if i wanna smoke in my car theres no way in hell the govt should have a right to tell me i cant. fvck that. since when do they have the authority to dictate every aspect of our lives?

especially the myopic & moronic tasmanian politicians who are a conservative embarrassment.

im gonna kidnap children & re-start smoking in my fvcking car dammit.

yes, the taxpayers wear the cost for smoking related illnesses, however smokers do pay a fair bit in taxes on cigs themselves. its like saying we shouldnt fix people who didnt wear seatbelts coz theyre the cause of their own misfortune.

Here is a summary of the new tobacco laws provided by one of my friends that is an Environmental Health Officer for a local council:

New Tobacco Laws

As of 1st March 2006 and 1st July 2007 the Victorian Government will be implementing new tobacco reforms. The new laws will aim to prevent youth smoking by reducing access to tobacco, to reduce the harms of passive smoking, and to improve the operation and enforcement of the Tobacco Act 1987.

New tobacco laws being introduced on the 1st March 2006 include:

• Smoking will be prohibited in all covered areas of train platforms, tram shelters and bus shelters.

• Smoking, the display of tobacco products, and the sale of tobacco products will be prohibited at underage events.

• ‘Buzz marketing’ and ‘non branded tobacco advertising’ marketing methods will be prohibited.

• Laws enforcing the ban of cigarette sales to young people will be strengthened.

• Smoking will be banned in most enclosed workplaces. This ban will not apply to the existing partial smoking restrictions on the casino, licensed premises and approved venue.

New tobacco laws to be introduced 1st July 2007:

• Smoking will be banned in all enclosed licensed premises.

i think it's great because fair enough if it's your choice that you want to smoke, but for all the non smokers out there it's our choice NOT to smoke and yet if we want to enjoy a night out we have to put up with inhaling the damn shit!
