Here is a summary of the new tobacco laws provided by one of my friends that is an Environmental Health Officer for a local council:
New Tobacco Laws
As of 1st March 2006 and 1st July 2007 the Victorian Government will be implementing new tobacco reforms. The new laws will aim to prevent youth smoking by reducing access to tobacco, to reduce the harms of passive smoking, and to improve the operation and enforcement of the Tobacco Act 1987.
New tobacco laws being introduced on the 1st March 2006 include:
• Smoking will be prohibited in all covered areas of train platforms, tram shelters and bus shelters.
• Smoking, the display of tobacco products, and the sale of tobacco products will be prohibited at underage events.
• ‘Buzz marketing’ and ‘non branded tobacco advertising’ marketing methods will be prohibited.
• Laws enforcing the ban of cigarette sales to young people will be strengthened.
• Smoking will be banned in most enclosed workplaces. This ban will not apply to the existing partial smoking restrictions on the casino, licensed premises and approved venue.
New tobacco laws to be introduced 1st July 2007:
• Smoking will be banned in all enclosed licensed premises.
