I wasn't going to go. I was feeling sick last night with a sore throat & fever. My friend said "get lots of rest". So I was resting at home, when my friend Pam called. I didn't pick up the first 2 times, knowing she'd want me to get out. The third time I picked up. "We're at Cuba Libre---we're going to see Billy Idol later...you gotta come."
I hauled my sorry carcass down to Cuba Libre, and talked HER into coming to Infusion & Zabiela.
Element has an intimidating dance floor when it's empty. It's a big open space in front of the DJ booth, with deep carpeted wings on either side. Noone seems to want to be the one "on display" out there alone. So either everyone gets on & dances, or noone gets on & dances. Lance's set was great, but not many people danced.
When Infusion started, there was an immediate rush to the dance floor. Infusion set up on the back wall. 3 guys. The guy in the middle (Jamie) wore a black shirt & a tie. The tie lent an aura of decorum & class. The far left one sang & played keyboards. The one on the far right seemed to be the DJ. Middle guy (Jamie) looked like he was working the sound boards & reverb.
I was stunned to see a live Electronic act. Other live Electronic acts (like Kraftwerk), it seems like they push "play" on their tracks, then make a few minor tweeks. But Infusion was creating it, reverbing it, singing, bouncing--I was present at the generation of music. I could only compare it to seeing the B-52s & realizing that Fred Schneider made all the weird noises in Rock Lobster with his mouth. Infusion was making these sounds, & forming an aural picture, right before my eyes.
Where I was (at the front) everyone seemed very in to it, jumping around. It was great that Infusion was as much into it as us. No stoic frowns, they were bouncing around & jamming & grinning. At times it seemed that there were as many people at the front taping the show or taking photos of the show as dancing. One guy said he was from Globalbeats.net. So those should be floating around soon, to further enrage or inform those who didn't make the show.
There were a few songs in the middle I did NOT like, they just didn't gel. That's okay, I went & got another drink during those parts, & made the good songs all the better. The last 4 songs were solid. I thought they sounded very New-Ordery. They finished with a great cover of "Send me an angel".
Infusion alone would have been more than enough. JBooty & I were talking about how in NYC, the show would have been $35, & we wouldn't have been able to get in. & if we were able to get in, we wouldn't be able to stand 4 feet from the stage like we were.
James Zabiela's set was good. They switched the DJ stands again, so he was playing at the front. I didn't like this location--I like the back stand better. The crowd thinned out somewhat after 2 AM, but was still enthuastic. I wish I could remember more, but it was so late.
Infusion said they're going to WMC in Miami next week--if you have the chance see them, see them, see them. & they're just nice guys, too--they were excited to be in the States.
