Time is not the fourth dimention. Time is an aspect of the third dimention, or more accuratly put it is a reference-based point of view from within the third dimension.

The existence of time makes it much easier to quantify the movements from our point of view (in the third dimension). It's existence is defined by the speed of light, and doesn't exist when the speed of light is breeched.

Regarding the first thought posted in this thread (the one about looking at stars in the sky is like looking backwards in time), I actually thought of it quite a few times. I never took it quite as deep, but then again I wasn't stoned out of my tree either. I told it to my sister once, and she almost smacked me.

That's awesome, maybe I should get me some shrooms.

Sorry to be a bastard, but the closest star to us is the Sun which is only 8 light minutes away. Also it's Sirius that's called "the Dog Star", not Alpha Centauri.

Alot of starlight that we see is coming from stars that are already dead, and its taken the light from those stars an amount of "time" to get here. If time didnt exist, then everything would exist in one instance and therefore the light of the sun would be hitting us all the time, as well as the darkness of when its not there and the light of a quadrillion (is that even a number?) stars would be hitting us all at once!

Or im talking out of my ass...

yes, but that light "moves" across the universe to reach us. therefore, we are able to "measure" it by using our measurement system for our concept of time. as i stated before, if everything in the universe were stationary, there would be no time to talk of.

interesting. someone around here has a 4-D "cube" in their sig, and it is my understanding from others statements that the 4th dimension would be time. this is a moving cube-like object. there is a 3-d cube which does not move. then the 4-d cube which moves around. and because its a self-moving cube, there is time the 4th dimension. it looks like a cube, but it really isnt a cube.

can anyone touch up on this thing.

I stand corrected . Although my searches bring up the distance of 4.2 to 4.3 light years.

What I meant was if you take the amount of stars in our own milky way (example) and divide it by the amount which have planetary bodies, then by the amount of which could theoretically support life, then by which of them could have had intelligent life arisen, and so on, it ends up to be in the millions. That would put an average distance of about 200 light years between each. So IF this is the case, our closest neighbors , if they knew we were here and wanted to examine us, would see light that left here 200 years ago. I got a few circuits crossed earlier.

And slowed it down - to 38 mph.

I know the sig you're talking about, and that is not a four dimensional cube (also known as a hypercube), it is a moving three dimensional cube. It is not possible for the fourth dimension (or any dimension higher) to be visualized by humans, because we are three dimensional beings; it is simply beyond our capability. Once again, time is nothing more than an aspect of the third dimension, and a classification of how things act within it.

It is a common misconception that time is the fourth dimension.

No no no no nooooo! The moving of the cube is just to help us visualise it, because visualising 4-dimesional object is very difficult. Just as a 3d cube is a net of 2-dimensional squares folded into 3d space, a 4d 'cube' (or "tesseract") is a net of 3d cubes folded into 4d hyperspace.

There's your tesseract net. Just as you would fold a net of 6 squares to form a cube, you have to be able to imagine 'folding' the cubes in a 4th spatial dimension to form a tesseract.

Space is infinite. The problem with humans is that they like everything to be finite. Humans have set-up a society of restriction, rules, regulations & limitations. The universe does not work like this unfortunately. Every limitation can be broken. Particle size, for example, will never be finite. You will always be able to zoom into it & zoom out of it infinitely. Our scales say a particular particle is a certain measured size, but it could be possible that on another planet where another alien culture exists, their sizing standards are different to ours & their references may be inconceivable to our way of thinking. On Earth we already have different sizing systems (eg the metric vs. the imperial system). These systems become invalid as soon as a scale becomes too big or too small. Our telescopes & microscopes are limited & can only zoom to a certain extent. Zooming is infinite; a particle can be enlarged & enlarge again & enlarged again & again indefinitely. Universes exist inside universes; but this is where it gets interesting. The particles that we know of only exist at the zooming extents we are capable of. This means there are an infinite amount of particles that we do NOT know of. Enter the multiverse. Between the fabrics of our known space exists micro-verses or miniature universes. In one tiny 'spec' there are an infinite number of universes. This could be explained as the 4th dimension theory (but that term is old & explains nothing more than being beyond 3 dimensions). The term 'multiverse' is much better & explains allot more about Space-time.

If you were able to shrink yourself to the size of a piece of dirt (say 10000:1) & then re-define that scale as being 1 is to 1. You proceed to shrink yourself again. Do this 1000 times. You would have shrunk yourself small than an atom. & Then go smaller than an electron & keep shrinking yourslef unitl the electron becomes the size of a planet etc. With our eyes we would not be able to recognize the new universe for it would be nothing like what we recognize on Earth -->it wouldn't be anything like the end of a crappy Men Black movie where you zoom out & then realize that your universe is a freaken marble that aliens are playing a game with! That’s crap. If we could enter into the multiverse we could control 'time'. In reality time does not exist. Time is infinite. Our lives are like a tiny spec of sand on an infinitely extending beach. We exist on one plane where everything you see & touch will exist forever as one form or another. Everything exist forever, it only changes in form. It is like saying we were born from the Earth & when we die we go back to the Earth. It is like everything is recycled indefinitely. I will stop now before I continue indefinitely.
