a lot of djs pre-plan their sets, at least to an extent

i know every week i head to the club with a pretty good idea of what i'm going to play in mind
it's not a set-in-stone tracklist that i'm going to adhere to, but i have a pretty good idea of what is going to sound good where and i might have a couple mixes that i'll want to do

sure you want to react to the crowd and choose your records accordingly, but you can also steer or guide them in certain directions you want to go and such, especially if they've been drinking/doing drugs

that and once you develop a following, they show up every week expecting to hear certain tracks, signature tracks if you will
and god forbid if you don't play those tracks

I find alcohol makes me mix better

Today my friend were here...just hopped up on the decks and busted out an awesome set...too bad I didn't record it.

I pre plan my sets when recording for something big, like ETN or a Club promo cd

Oh I know some DJs plan some of there set, I've done it, but I have heard sets from DJs where at 2 different venues they've played the EXACT same set, don't blame them, they wanna play certain tracks, and they already know how to do the entire set, why wouldn't you, this I think would only be good for the top DJs who play night after night, if its twice a week, then they should get creative.

As for signature records, I was actually known for being the one to drop Rank1 - Airwave when it first came out as I was lucky enough to get it before I knew what it is, you only heard it now and then in sets from the big DJs and dunno if anyone in my town also had it, but then it became popular and so lost its effect, I was also known at some house partys for the guy who drops Perfect Phase - Horny Horns, I know, my bad, but you gotta love the amount of processed cheese that track is filled with, its a classic in my book.

Judging from experience, unless its a couple beers, it will probably make you worse.

But you think it sounds better and at the end of the day, isn't that all that really matters
