It's all about tolerance, man. It's not as if people can't be friends if they have different beliefs. How many conservatives do you know with liberal friends, and vice versa? They probably think that people of different political opinions are stupid, ignorant, brain-washed, etc, but it doesn't mean they have less respect or don't want to be friends.
And with respect to brain-washing, yes, most religions perpetuate themselves by indoctrination. Why are the children of Catholics more likely to be Catholic than the children of Shintos or Hindus? The minds of children are much, much, much more easy to convince of beliefs founded upon faulty logic than adults are.
Kids are gullible... that's why you can convince them of the existance of Santa Claus. When you try to convince them of the existance of God, they're more likely to believe you than adults are, and are more likely to adopt those same beliefs and carry them into adulthood. Of course, most religious families indoctrinate their children into believing in God much more deeply than they do about Santa Claus, so the belief is harder to dispel. Santa Claus gets focused on once per year; many religious parents force their kids to pray every day and send them to some kind of service once a week, so they're constantly exposed to it. It's just very difficult for people to abandon those kind of beliefs when they're so deeply ingrained in their lives.
There are very few people who grow up as Atheists and become religious later in life. A far greater number of people grow up in a religious home and decide to become Atheist or Agnostic later in life. |
While I can't really argue with any of your points cause you're right on most of them, I've noticed that many, many Athiests have a very elitist attitude. Believe what you want, I say, but please don't insult me or my beliefs in the process. And that goes for anyone. Christian, Athiest, Muslim, etc.
Comparing this to politics though, I dunno about that. My main beef with all these political heads is they're too caught up trying oh so hard to be on ONE side, which I think is bullshit. Just like Chris Rock said, listen to the topic at hand, and THEN form your own opinion about it.
