I'm with Denis on this. Certain oldschool tracks can't really be played in a set, so that's why there are remakes, however I still think there are some tunes that can be played in a set and would still fit with what's being played. As for just pure uplifting trance constantly? Sure it can be done but for me I need some variety. I can't listen to a 6 hour set with nothing but anthemic huge build up trance. Just like I can't listen to a set filled with 8 hours of progressive house. I'd want to kill myself afterwards...

Man, I am just listening to ETN.FM right now (May 14, 2005 @9:49 pm) and DJ Voiz is playing a set.

Now can anybody tell me why when I go out, I cannot find a club in Toronto that plays this ?

Please, can anybody tell me where I can find music like this in Toronto, so I can dance to this ?

This for me is Trance.

I can't really explain it but even when you fit in in a set where it should be it doesn't sound right.

That's why alot of producers have gone ahead and done remixes of these classic tracks to make the production styles up to date with the current evolution of trance so that they don't sound out of place/date when you mix them in.

PS- Not that genre-izing music is important enough to fight over but Armin was playing tech-trance last Thursday- not house... and it was by-far the best set I've ever heard from him. Nice to see he's moving away from that formulaic anthem trance in into some more thoughtful stuff

I have been reading through this thread........and I am like WTF! Since the first trance tracks I owned from RISING HIGH/EYE-Q ('93)..........Dennis is speaking truth..........the "epic" style hit its peak in '99.......the same year that people started dissing it in the UK for its popularity as it spiralled into success in the North American market (namely USA - Paul Oakenfold) with the year 2000 trance went back underground and toughened itself-matured/and in some aspects bastardized itself commercially for acceptance......toca me.....stringer RIVA.......adding vocals for the sake of mainstream chart success ...... and much of what we hear now is the mixing of the progressive elements of Sasha and Digweeds/BT style combined with the lush adaptations/key pads of classic tracks re-rubbed...........the beats are blurred from 128-138 BPM......eventually fusing into undistinctual genres.......save the artists interpretation he/she imparts their sound to imbue......12 years of ardently following this music......has proved that every 5 years...there has been a major shift from "vocal/epic tance" to "techno/progressive trance" always in cycles much like house/techhouse/disco house........even Tiesto went darker with Traffic in direct response to the more mature sounds expected from the educated dancefloor.......we are much more aware now than five years ago as to what we are listening to.....ARTIST/TITLE/LABEL.....with an educated consumer comes more demand for variation and choice.......and this is exactly the environment that we are so lucky to have access too.

A gross miss-statement of Armin's set as prog-house last month/fall - or ever.....people were pissed that he didn't play classics like he did at GUV for Easter weekend 2004.......sometimes you take away the vocals and people STILL (unabashaded) cry - what is this TECHNO!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!

Didn't really understand Dennis' comments until I saw him at the Purple Room on Friday. Ya DAMN right he speaks the truth. Took some classic epic trance and had a few great remixes (can't remember the track but I remember I flipped out when I heard it).

Ferry Corsten also has a few "housey/prog" tracks...I LOVE his "Cubikated" (don't know if that's in the genre you're talking about because I'm not very good at classifying this stuff--epic is where I'm at)...

Can't wait to hear Dennis again...you guys going to Republik next Sunday are in for a treat...
