Cholo
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Cholo is a slang term in Spanish, although it also appears in American English. It has two somewhat different meanings, one in North America (the United States and Mexico) and another in South America.

  1. In North America, cholo is a fairly offensive term implying a chicano gangster. It stereotypically implies wearing chinos (khaki pants), so-called wifebeater sleeveless t-shirts, or flannel shirts with only the top buttoned, and a hairnet or a bandana worn low on the forehead. This same designation may be associated with black ink tattoos, commonly involving gang, calligraphy or family names and art. This is the image that Cheech Marin drew on in the Cheech and Chong films. This usage was more prevalent in the 1970s and 1980s than today. The parents of cholos were commonly called pachuco zoot suiters.

  2. In South America a cholo is a person of mestizo (Native American and European ancestry). In recent years, the meaning of the term has shifted to describe the mestizos it was originally intended for, as well as those of exclusively Native American ancestry who aspire to higher social status. It often implies a bilingual person who speaks both fluent Spanish and an Amerindian language. This usage is also pejorative, but somewhat less so than in the US and Mexico. It might be comparable to Yuppie.

During the Peruvian elections, the incumbent Alejandro Toledo was nicknamed El cholo versus the president Alberto Fujimori, El chino.

A cholo or chicano might also stereotypically own a low rider. The chicanos were the ones that started the low rider trend and started the oldest gangs of California.

From UrbanDictionary.com:
2. cholo
1) Mexican Gangster

2) Mexican Gangster Style

1) "My homeboy got shot up but some cholos from Norte." OR "I'm cruisin' the eastside with a couple cholos."

2) "Hey ese, check out that vato over there looking all cholo."

Be skeptic about definitions, even if those defenitions are from a respected site like UrbanDictionary.com

I hav been living in Thailand for about 5 years now. I was borned and raised in India and shifted to Bangkok,Thailand for university. Therefore I am very much a 'colored' TA as you may call it.
Thai's are a bunch of VERY patriotic people so they feel very strongly about any foreigner in their country as it is a haven for foreign investors/sex tourists/businessmen/regular tourists. The most commonly used term for a foreigner here is 'farang' which technically means a foreigner of Caucasian descent. For practical purposes, the term refers to ANY foreigner be it a Caucasian/SE-Asian/Middle-Eastern/South Asian.

It can be used in a racist/insulting way. If you are a foreigner working in a Thai company and the term 'farang' is directed at you, it is probably intended as an insult/racial slur. A street vendor/taxi driver saying it is unlikely to mean any offense at all. The other term is called 'khaek' which refers to us Indians/Thai Sikh's. More often than not, if it is used , it is meant to racial and insulting.

Basically, there are 3 main communities here.
1)Pure Thai's
2)Chinese Thai's(they constitute about 30-40% of the population. In families like this, usually the mother is Thai and the father is Chinese)
3)Thai Sikh's(Indians who migrated to Thailand about 2-3 generations ago and have Thai nationality. They consider themselves 'Thai' but the Thai's don't consider them 'Thai' but they treat them equally)

Out of the abovementioned communities, the racists fall into mainly the 1st and 2nd category though it is MORE in the second category.
However, racism is quite rare in Thailand. The people are generally a bunch of very sweet, considerate and polite people. Racism at most is indirect but rarely gets physical. Thai's tend to avoid confrontations and will probably discrimate against someone by word of mouth to a friend rather than physically assault someone or say it to their face.

Personally, I have NEVER been discriminated against in a serious way. Of course, there have been the insulting 'farang'/'khaek' cracks behind my back but nothing more serious than that.
I have also lived in Korea and Japan for a while in the past 5 years and never been discriminated against there either.

I am pretty well "mixed" (Mexican, Native American, Spanish, Italian), but I would consider my ethnicity "latino."

I have never encountered overt racism until I went to Arizona.

As near as I can tell, it’s like Alabama and Mississippi there.

If you are not "white" and dressed like a redneck, they'll hate you.

All I ask is that you give me a fair shot, and I’ll give you a fair shot.

That sounds reasonable right?

I think racism is one the the biggest issues we face.

A couple of more stories:

My grandfather when he was in WWII knew a soldier from Mississippi who killed a black American soldier. He just shot him on the street over some argument.

He was never prosecuted because the guy he killed was black.

The Mississippi guy was a friend of my grandfather though until that point, and my grandfather was actually born in Mexico. He was of Italian and Native American descent, but looked light skinned. So my grandfather was ok, but the black guy wasn't human apparently.

My grandfather was sworn in as a US citizen in a huge stadium in Rome with hundreds of thousands of other guys.

--------------------------------

I know a Latino guy who served in Iraq 1, and he was in some little redneck town in Texas outside of Dallas/Fort Worth (called Hillsborough) eating with his family. Some redneck asshole cop came up to him and told them to leave because he didn't want "his kind' around there.

This was a guy who had just risked his ass defending America's oil supply mind you, and had just come back from Iraq.
