so what? you're paying money to see him play music regardless whether hes sober, drunk or high on crack. Look at the phenomenon of Rock'N'Roll - it was highly regarded to get completely off your tits and perform

its not your business what oakenfold does or takes, as long as those turntables are spinning you've got no case.

I don't give a shit if he does drugs/coke, but when it starts affecting his (or any DJ) ABILITY to perform a GOOD show... aka little to no trainwrecks, good track selection, smooth flow. etc.. then I have a problem with HIM/THEM as a DJ... All I have been listening to the last two weeks are Oakenfold 99 EM sets... They are fucking amazing.. I have heard recent sets by him, and watched a 2 hour live video stream.. and OMFG... I wanted to turn it off, but I was STUNNED and curious to see if MAYBE the next transistion (or track selection) would be good and worth-while........... god was I wrong to think it would be....

I will NEVER get those hours of my life back...

Agreed, I have seen him a couple of times but compared to back in the day his mixes, track selection etc. just totally blows chunks these days.
Full credit to him as he was a major pioneer back in the day but he never really evolved from that time and the rest of the scene passed him by.

To original post et al,
With regards to DJs taking drugs, I could name a ton of the top that do. There are several reasons for this, first up if you are playing several venues in one night and you do this every week it's hard to find the energy.
Drugs are all around you, if you look out over the dance floor you will see some real casualties gurning their tits off. After your set you will have people come up and say some of the most outlandish shit you have ever heard. It's all around, you are everybody's mate and the offers come up left right and centre. I learnt the hard way.
It's deep rooted in the dance music industry from the DJ all the way to the doorstaff. A lot of clubs have their own 'authorised' dealers and will kick the shit out of any others trying to move in on the scene.
Addictions and substance abuse or common place in this bussiness and to suggest anything else is naive.

Staying clean while you perform is actually a good idea.

Cheers
Nem

You know -

I realize it's been said a few times on this thread, but let's be serious people, the world in which we live sits atop a river of drug use. I personally don't see this as a problem because those that can handle drug use (whether crack, coke, dope, drinking, etc. be your thing) handle it, and those who can't, don't.

In my line of work, I continally encounter people who seem the most unlikely users of drugs, but are indeed a big fan of the hard stuff (cocaine mostly); I'm talking upper middle class suburban dweller's with families and jobs.

But as for Oakenfold doing coke, who gives a damn. He still makes the money and draws the crowds, so let the man be! Let's not forget he graced this world with "Tranceport!" (Although his set at Smmerfest last year was rather dissapointing)

Cocaine never has belonged into the trance culture. Other drugs have, but not the hard ones.

Sasha has been using decks to perfection for most of his DJ career, and now, using Maven and Ableton Live just shows how much hes evolved.
