OK BUDDY 1st of all EAW is one of the best manufacturer's for speaker components in the world I don't know where you are coming from, but everybody knows that; GUV's main room has EAW speaker components installed; the boxes themselves are designed by Steve Dash of Phazon. Apogee is a nice way to go, but there is only one problem, nobody carries them in Toronto, I only know of one person who has the Apogee cabinets, and that would be Carlos from A.C.S., and as far as I remember Carlos is not planning to resell them. Another thing about Apogee is that their bass bins are very easy to blow, you can ask Carlos about it.
2nd of all I'm not to impress with E.V.’s over all sound of their tops in other words the cabinets that reproduce the highs and mids; the way that they are built there are way to many highs, and very little mids therefore the sound is very ear piercing. As far as I remember Kool Haus has an E.V. setup. Over all I would say E.V is a good for Live P.A and symphony orchestra reinforcement, but its not ideal for the club setup simply because the sound isn’t warm enough.
The Docks, even though they have the Dynacord system and as they say in their press release it is one of the "best" setups in the world, can't touch Republik, the sound doesn't sound crisp, and the bass can't even kick, simply because of two reasons a) Docks is a giant warehouse that lacks acoustics and b) their sound system is not properly tweaked. Boa does have a great sound, but its simply because they were smart purchasing one of the perfect acoustic sounding buildings in Toronto, the club was a movie theatre before, and therefore it was built for acoustics.
Now back to the topic: Republik is one of the best sound systems that I have heard in ages, the sound is perfect, the highs and mids reproduce the crisp and at the same time its warm sound and the subs fill in the rest. Vertex did an awesome job tweaking the P.A., mad respects to those that setup “R”; if you were at R at the end of the night when Johan was closing you would have heard the full range of the system. REPUBLIK = E.A.W Components + Vertex Setup = PROFESSIONALLY INSTALLED SOUND SYSTEM . They got the highs that carry the music, the mids that fill in the sound with warmth and the lows that kick and fills in the rest.

Seeing as dark_entity is the only one that had anything intelligent to say...
E.V. and Dynacord are the same. They are both owned by Telex Communications and run on the same technology. If you look at anyclub with a dynacord soundsytem they have Electro Voices at strategic positions. For example, the dj booth, or in back rooms. You are right that many clubs that install Electro Voices are installing a system designed for a concert or symphony, much like the old system soundbar system. Anything from Telex communications is going to blow the competition out of the water if installed in the right situation. EAW is no where near the quality of Telex Communications.
The Apogees carry some of the deepest rib raddling bass. Yes I am aware of their potential to blow. I have helped Carlos install the system at a few raves.
There is so much more to bass the vibration. The bass at Republik reminded me of an AudioBahn car sub.
Yes Boa sounds great as they have an accoustically sound building, but also as the system matches it. The Alpha system is one of the few systems that is soley designed club use. If we look at Europe, which sets the trends, most systems at quality clubs use the Dynacord, especially in Germany. While the Docks doesnt have the greatest accoustics, there is no denying this system still pumps. There is a clarity to every sound. Its crystal clear, something I did not find at Republik.

I'd love to see this grand wizard of old skool trance k la whip up a set for us all.
I love this line the best..."The track selection was tolerable, but no where near as good as some of the tracks he layed down in the past" hahaha my god u really don't know ur songs????
Man he dropped bomb after bomb..new, old, remix, etc.. His set flowed beautifully, espically the baselines from track to track. Johan knows exactly how to keep people moving, even the asians were under his spell lol..and thats impressive.
haha RIP trance....spread the word TA's...shows over |
Yeah the only "trance" i heard was the really old stuff he played. Otherwise it was mostly tech and techno type beats which is why i was getting into parts of the set. Trance from 1999-2000 is over. It would be like me pining for funky house from the 90s. That stuff just aint happening anymore.

The bass was at best muffled. It had no punch what so ever, of course this would be expected when each bin consisted of one 15" woofer. Dont get me wrong, in comparison to most clubs it was good, just not at the same level as the rest of the Republik. Compared to Stereo, The Docks or Boa, the system at Republik is sub-par.

WTF?!?!! I'm not experienced enough to comment on sound systems, nor do I know the technical specs involved, but my internal organs have never been shaken as much as they were at Republik. I was standing in front of the DJ booth (not the center of the club) and I remember having to scream (the way you do on a rollercoaster to reduce the effect of the drop on your body) at the club!!!! I REMEMBER CONSCIOUSLY THINKING THAT!!! And a couple of girls I was dancing with were signalling to me that their bodies were totally getting blasted with the bass!!! IT WAS AWESOME!!!

Wow this makes perfect sense to me!!! Well said. I remember when I was walking up and leaving the front stage to say bye to Swamper and I kinda started to feel queazy because there was SO much bass, right at the front corner of the stage where the stairs go up...I was actually kinda nervous my internal organs would explode (or at least be affected somehow)!!! Went WAY beyond "tickling my feet", RobbyG!
I was wearing ear plugs the whole time!!! Mind you, I feel the bass is deeper and plusher with plugs. Also after a night like Gielen where the sound was so awesome, I think it's good to wear plugs if you don't want your ear drums bloody.
EDIT:

Trancegrooves, I disagree. I was parked in the parking lot and in P3 I could STILL HEAR THE BASS!!! IT WAS FRICKIN NUTS!!! I was smiling to myself as I was entering the elevator (loud as hell and shaking stuff in that little ticket-paying room) and was shocked when the reverberations were still entering my car. UNFUCKINGBELIEVABLE.
