I really like waving at people, applauding their dance moves, saying "hello" to strangers, and generally revelling in the profound sense of commaraderie that the experience begets. is this weird? does it freak out people because I migth come across as "creepy friendly"? if it does, f*ck it. there's only one way to make friends and that's by being totally extroverted. back to lawler: the thickness of beats made my soul hurt. also a total aphrodisiac. the magical powers of the funk compel me like i was a freeky satan.

Extasy will do that

that's a good point, and i'm not denying that it might have had some formative influence on the state of mind i found myself buried up to the tonsils in that night, but this "profound sense of community" thing lasts for weeks afterwards (especially after seeing a show like lawler). i find myself drenched in the salty oversoul when riding buses, when biking past long lines of toddlers each holding on to one of those "pack-o-cheerio" ropes, when spending time in little known and frequently forgotten parks around town, when buying lychees in chinatown and the grocery women telling me that i look like an asshole with my pink hair, when talking to the squeegee kids and giving them beer, and when getting yelled at for petting horses in old montreal. man, i'm just saying that some phenomenological shit is airbourne in this town, and beats like lawler's make it more tangible. that said, hallelujah for feet because thems' made for dancin'.

Steve Lawler/Sean Miller/XL at Stereo :

"It has taken me a while to try to figure out how to review this night as it was too good for words to explain. I showed up to Stereo with Sean around 1:30 AM for the final preparations before the club opened its doors and already the energy in the place was high...the staff were buzzing!!!

2 AM comes and "Lights Out" and cue the music...within 5 minutes there were people in the club. Right away I noticed people heading straight for the dance floor...they were ready for a night out and wasted no time getting warmed up. Sean did an amazing job getting the place worked up...about an hour and fifteen minutes into his set he rocked it out a bit and gave everyone a little taste of what was to come...then by 3:40 AM he slowed it down and just chugged along...you could feel the anticiapation building in the room...they were just waiting for Lawler to tear into them. Just after 4 AM Steve showed up and prepared...again...the lights went out and Steve started with his intro. Surpirisingly, he came out of the gate with some big tribal tunes and worked his way into his "electro" type sound...the room went off when he took to the decks.

From that moment on, everything changed...the place was packed wall to wall filled with poeple from all different walks of life. A couple of hours into his set I can honestly say that there is only one other place in the world that I have witnessed such uninhabited and wild fun...and that is DC-10 Ibiza. This party was pure sleeze, his music was funky, sleezy, dirty, grimey, and pure underground!!! The vibe in that room was intense!!! That room is magic and even Lawler was feeling it...at the end of his set his words to me were "I belong in this room." He even got on the mic and and said "Thank you and I love you Stereo."

After Lawler finished, I discovered yet another reason as to why I love MTL and Stereo so much. XL came on the decks at 8 AM (as Steve and Sean had to catch a flight to Mexico at 10 AM) and nobody left the room. Lawler was done but the people on the dance floor were there to stay...I loved the fact that when people in MTL go out...they are out for the night...and they support there locals in a big way.

A big thank you go's out to all of the staff at Stereo...Niko, Shorty, Arianne, all the security, and the bus boys...the staff at Stereo are absolutely amazing! Extremely friendly, accomodating, and they kept the place spotless all night.

I look forward to my next trip to MTL!

-Carey"
