The original procedure required removal of the transparent membrane on the outside of the eye for the laser to be able to reshape the cornea.
I believe the reason why they did this was because there might have been unknown differences in the thickness of this membrane, causing a change in the actual placement of the laser beam due to differences in refraction.
I could be wrong, but that's the explaination that makes the most sense to me without being an expert, so for that to be true, they must have figured out a new way of measuring such things and factoring them into the aiming of the laser beam making that cut unnecessary.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't that also make all the post operative care unnecessary as well? No eyedrops and no excessive drying of the eyes?
