several times I've pushed it to the absolute limit:
1st time :
year 1 of engineering at mac. Up for 3 straight days, drank a crapload of coffee, and it caught up to me quickly and my work suffered. The more I stayed up, the less productive I became, and then was forced to stay up later, etc....judgement really does go hand in hand with sleep, and lack of sleep is a bad idea. I was running on so much adrenaline by the end I couldn't get to sleep, and a girl on my floor gave me some melatonin sleeping pills, doubling the doseage figuring I was 'a big guy'. 45 mins alter, I could barely lift my math textbook back to my room to get to bed. Went to sleep in the coma position, didn't wake up from that night till morning the second day afterward. My roomate had thought I'd literally died, but my body just completely shut down and I couldn't wake myself. Worst thing was having to go to the bathroom immediately upon regaining consiousness.
2nd time:
year 2 engineering physics, during the midterm time around thanksgiving. I had 5 midterms, 6 assignments, and 3 labs in 10 days totalling very significant portions of my marks on a number of courses. Had 3 hours sleep in 5 days, with only 3 full meals to go along with it. The extreme lack of sleep and food caused me to fail a couple of the midterms, without question. By the end, I was hallucinating, flat out hallucinating to the point where I saw 'underpants gnomes' from a specific south park episode. I even started singing the corresponding song that went along with that episode, and was in uncontrollable fits of laughter because I was literally losing my mind. The entire week following, my housemates stole some of my underwear and hung it from the ceiling of the living room to emphasize how crazy I became. No sleeping pills were necessary after that bout with insomnia though.
