it's a nice experience if you come to the right party. hey, jump on a plane; Richie Hawtin is here on April 1st at our cave club (yep, a club inside a real cave that was once used by our aboriginies)
anyways, back on track. the difference is, the EDM scene here was very underground, hell, the first big party, Sven Vath back in 2000, had only 400-500 people. however, it grew exponentially till around 2004, where it was at its greatest point ever. since then, it has been downhill.
for example, Deep Dish came here in 2002 and threw down one of the most monumental sets in history. everything from prog to techno, nothing like the commercial bullshit that plagues their record boxes nowadays. it was the biggest party to date, in the cave club as well, with 3200 people.
over the course of 2003 and 2004, we had quality events at our premiere and only EDM exclusive club. everyone from James Zabiela to Danilo Vigorito threw some tracks down in there. bigger events had names like Frank Lorber, Satoshi Tomiie, Sasha & Digweed (individually), Nick Warren, Danny Howells, Marco Carola, Chus & Ceballos, even Tiesto; basically all genres (except for DnB, not popular here).
2005 became the year of fashion over function, where 'raves' became the latest thing. Deep Dish re-visited, again the largest party to date, but this time, abusively commercial. this began what i deem the era of the dominican mega-productions. the epitomy being that 2005 Tiesto event, which was so commercial it shied away all the original partiers, which flee from such displays.
so sure, you get a bunch of kids who've heard In My Memory and Silence to get fake IDs and go plague a party, of course they'll think Tiesto is god. i reserve godly attributes only for Sasha's set @ the cave club in 2003 and Lorber's beach set in summer 2004.
it was all downhill from there. the vibe was lost. the crowd got shitty, and the club even got closed down. now everyone wants to be a DJ, everyone wants to be a promoter, everyone wants to say they're booking a bigname, and everyone basically sucks at it. still, you get the odd, but incredible party worth going. last ones have been Frank Lorber on NYE (and the afterparty till 6pm ), and Patrick Jung of M.A.N.D.Y. waaaay before that.
2006 brings with it hopes for better parties. there is the promise of Sven Vath this year, for a re-visit after 6 years. 2 members of Underground Resistance (Los Hermanos) will be here in April, as will Pig & Dan, and Richie Hawtin. there is also the ongoing threat of Steve Bug.

anyone wants to come party down here, drop me a PM and i'll give you whatever info i've got. i also host parties now and then with the crazier local DJs, so you never know.
