I know Hotmail does that. I just wanted to know to make sure I don't lose my account. I'm not sure when I'll switch over, b/c I use my hotmail for a lot of important things besides friends. Like school, work, banking...that kinda stuff. And I don't want to accidently forget to tell them I switched, or to have them not properly change my information. So I was thinking of waiting for a little while until I actually do the switch over. But does anyone know the answer to that?

Also...what exactly are these invite things? I know what they do...they invite people to Gmail. But how do you get invites, and why do you even really need them? Just tell people to sign up for a Gmail account.

Up until recently, for the past couple years, you couldn't "just sign up", as you needed to be invited in order to do so. People that have hoarded all of their invites can't accept that they no longer have value

Changing e-mails is a bitch, and I'm in the process of chanign over from Hotmail to GMail (and from using Outlook Express to Mozilla Thunderbird)

Step 1: Add everyone to your address book.
Step 2: Send an e-mail to everyone necessary of your new e-mail address.
Step 3: this is the monitoring period, where you're playing damage control and telling the idiots the didn't pay attention to your e-mail, and are still sending messages to your old address, that you've changed your e-mail address. also use this time to hit all of the websites that your old e-mail address is registered as the contact for, and change to your new address.

It's been almost a week since someone's sent mail to my old address, and i only have a jew more job search websites to change over. i'll be importing my Outlook Express to Thunderbird this weekend

I did it in a different way, lol. I still use my hotmail for all impersonal e-mails - newsletters, and other automatically or mass-mailed e-mail things. Garbage, basically. Gmail is reserved to be used strictly for more personal e-mails - like for my friends or for people I actually know.

Thanks,

do you know if there's a way to move emails? Like I have a bunch of emails saved under Hotmail that I would like to move to Gmail, but I don't want to just have to copy and them and send them under my name...it would do that if I were forwarding them as well. I would prefer to keep the name of the person who sent it.

go to the help centre in you gmail a/c, it will tell you exactly how to do the switch-over of all of your contacts from your hotmail. there's even an audio demo to guide you through the process. https://mail.google.com/support/bin....py?answer=8301

i don't think the gmail a/c expires like the hotmail a/c.

invites are there b/c random people can't just sign up. whoever wants a gmail a/c needs to be invited by an existing gmail user. in your inbox there's a tab on the right that tells you how many invites you have left. i still have 100.

Only if you're using an e-mail client, like Outlook, Outlook Express, Mozilla Thunderbird, Netscape Mail, Eudora, PocoMail, etc.

Unfortunately, you can only configure a Hotmail address through Outlook Express, and that's only if you're a paying Hotmail customer, and that costs $20 a year, so if it's worth that much to you, it's not too expensive. I was a Hotmail/Outlook Express user before that stipulation was put in place, so I'm grandfathered into the priviledge.

Irrelevant Sidenote: you can configure Hotmail through Thunderbird if you're a paying Hotmail customer, and you pay $20 for HotPopper, which is a Thunderbird add-on to make this work.

I guess you can now see why I'm ditching Hotmail. Outlook Express is very quirky and has many security vulnerabilities, so I'm happy to leave it.

When you install Thunderbird, you'll be asked if you want to import from OE or Outlook, but even after that you can run the import tool.

With respect to importing web Hotmail into web GMail, that's not possible. You would have to "physically" forward each e-mail to your new address.

I signed up for mine about a month ago, and my buddy signed up for his last week.

How and where, well, that's classified information, ma'am.

For import purposes, you could technically view message source in Hotmail, save the file as .eml and even import it into OE. From there you can use a utility that allows you to import messages from TB/OE, etc into a gmail account (GML - Google Message Loader - site is down ). Haven't tried it myself and I know It's not perfect but does the trick..

...is all this mess worth it just to get away from hotmail? hell yah! lol

that is not possible.

2. How do I sign up?

You can get a Gmail account if you're invited by someone who already has one. Or, you can sign up for an account using your mobile phone.
