I was surprised how commercially successful it became, what with it's slightly tech-trance slant, but take a shitty vocal and a cheesy stab, and you have a money maker

I'm gonna have to go with ATRC too, I like some of the prog trance that came after it, but on a whole, I found the number of tracks that really did it for me declined from 2004 onwards.

That said, I do miss the years of carefree abandon 98/99, when every tune was new and amazing because my ears had yet to be saturated by trance for nigh on a decade.

Oddly, I still love the trance that I find that still does it for me

Guys, I recommend that you visit a teenage disco sometime... you'll hear the worst piece of euro shit you can imagine, but look at the people: they're dnacing around and they're happy. This is where you'll say "but they have no idea what real music is" -> They don't care! For them, this is real music! They don't care about who's making profits recycling songs that's already been used. But the music they listen to, stuff that most of us would shoot ourselves if we had to listen to, is making them happy.

Just like there's music that makes us happy. In my case McProg, I happen to like the commercial trance and progressive music of today and I don't agree that the music lost it's good quality at all

The point in music is to bring out feelings in you, it has always been from the dawn of man. Just enjoy the style you like and let others enjoy what they like.

my 2 and a half cents

Children. There was tumor growth and metastasis for many years subsequent, but Children is the clearest origin of what has happened.

I'll put my head on the block, just to make things interesting. I'm a PvD fan (not a worshipper, I know he puts out some shit tunes), and I think he has mastered the craft completely. Now, do you think it was his (and Tiesto's, Armin's, & Ferry's) measure of somewhat commercial success that has brought about the so-called evolution of trance into a house-prog bastard child with bits of minimal trance thrown in for good measure. And if this is the case, wouldn't songs like "Tell Me Why", "We Are Alive", "Suburban Train", "Flight 643" & what not be the major contributing factor towards the production shift? Just a thought, nothing more....

Downfall of trance? Trance was never made to be an intellectual genre. Music academies will never study this genre of music. No musical genius is required to produce a trance track. It's produced for fun easy listening; for clubland. You people make it seem like Bach just sold-out and started writing bluegrass; like Hendrix started to play emopunk; like Richard David James agreed to perform with Radiohead. Trance is trance. Its easily accessible music made for the masses to dance to. Don't try to make it sound like it was better in some previous existence. You people are all just in denial. You've finally started to realize how shitty trance is as a style of music, and now you're trying to justify your past attachments to it by claiming it has evolved to shit. Trance then, trance now, its all the same. That's what we love it for. But its still shit music.
